Wellington Shire Council is currently seeking a highly motivated and experienced professional to join our progressive Waste and Sustainability team on a permanent full-time basis.

As the Sustainability Education Officer, you will design, develop and implement community sustainability education programs, events and projects in line with the Wellington Shire Council Sustainability Strategy 2020-24. Your key focus will be to drive environmental awareness across the organisation and increase the knowledge and involvement of our local community in achieving sustainable outcomes.

To be successful in this role you will need to demonstrate a genuine desire in promoting sustainability and climate change. In addition you will demonstrate the relevant knowledge of current environmental issues including waste and resource recovery, biodiversity and integrated water management.

This is an integral role within our Waste & Sustainability team which will see you play an active part in the community; working with key partners, local schools, businesses and community groups to drive behavioural change to achieve Waste and Resource recovery targets. You will be able to communicate effectively in an educational environment and demonstrate excellent networking skills.

This is an exciting career opportunity to provide education and awareness for the purpose of long-term sustainability within a progressive and diverse Council.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate how they meet the criteria below:

  • Degree qualified in environmental science, science education, community engagement, science communications or related field, or lesser formal qualifications and substantial relevant experience (would be advantageous).
  • Knowledge or understanding of a broad range of environmental issues, including climate change, waste and resource recovery, biodiversity, integrated water management, and knowledge of emerging community related solutions to these issues.
  • Practical experience in developing and delivering a range of engagement, education and communication programs.
  • Proven organisational skills and ability to set priorities and work under pressure to achieve set deadlines
  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate and engage with a range of stakeholders.
