Melbourne Zoo has a 12 month fixed-term opportunity for an experienced Interpretation Manager to engage visitors in the Zoo's conservation programs. The successful applicant will be highly experienced in staff and volunteer management as well as the design, delivery and evaluation of innovative interpretive experiences that uses a range of interpretive media, including face-to-face interpretation.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Managing a highly motivated, effective and outcome-focused team
  • Driving the delivery of a conservation-based experience across the site, leading cross-functional teams to meet community conservation action targets through innovative visitor experiences
  • Managing the development of onsite interpretation showcasing the Zoo's conservation programs so that visitors leave with a high awareness of Zoo's fighting extinction programs and what they can do to help
  • Ensuring all onsite interpretation aligns with the Zoo's connect-understand-act model
  • Delivering new exhibit interpretation associated with Capital Projects, new or refreshed animal exhibits, interpretive projects and programs
  • Maintaining and refreshing all existing interpretive media onsite including graphics and signage, multimedia, props and dressings, soundscapes and sculpture
  • Developing and refining interpretive frameworks and key narratives for the Zoo's Precincts and exhibits as part of the Zoo's Site Development Plan
  • Writing interpretive plans and project brief to engage contractors in the design, fabrication and installation of a variety of interpretive media including graphics, sculpture, interactives and multimedia
  • Ensuring the face to face interpretation delivered by presentation staff and other Zoo staff is regularly refreshed and supported through training and aligns with the Zoo's Presentation Toolkit
  • Managing the onsite component of the Zoo's volunteer program ensuring that all volunteers are supported through well-developed roles, training, rosters and up to date records
