About the Role

This is a rare and exciting opportunity to break climate stories which have an impact on the national agenda. You will lead and generate impactful, innovative, creative and digital-first national climate coverage across all ABC platforms and provide audiences with a diversity of perspectives.

Work closely with the Climate Team Editor, digital specialists, and other ABC stakeholders to:

  • Deliver digital-first, trusted and impactful journalism, with an audience-centred approach.
  • Research, write, produce and present accurate, concise and clear stories of a complex nature at an outstanding level for digital, broadcast, social and emerging platforms to meet new and under-served audiences where they are.
  • Lead and contribute to editorial meetings as required, suggesting ideas, leads and angles.
  • Develop and maintain a vast contact base in the round to generate original stories.
  • Research story material, identify suitable sources, and arrange and conduct interviews to support your own and others’ output.
  • Maintain a sophisticated understanding of multimedia story telling techniques and generate content that engages, entertains and informs the audience.
  • Present live reports and participate in Q&As of a complex nature with flair to engage the audience.

About You

We are seeking a climate expert through either experience or qualifications, who can confidently explain and contextualise complicated issues in a live, time-critical environment. You will have the necessary editorial judgement and demonstrated leadership experience required for the reporting of complex stories for news and current affairs across video, digital, audio, on-demand and social platforms.

You will also be able to demonstrate:

  • Outstanding ability to motivate and guide others and take direction and advice from managers and specialist colleagues, while working collaboratively in a fast-paced news team.
  • A proven ability to source and maintain national and international contacts.
  • High level understanding of audience, digital and social media trends including emerging platforms and maximise reach and engagement.
  • Significant experience in planning, producing, and delivering innovative news.
