About the role

We are seeking a collaborative and dynamic leader to build on and execute our communications and engagement strategy. You’ll play a key role in advancing our impact and position as a trusted national authority and commentator on issues informed by applied science, technology and engineering, and in raising the profile of our acclaimed high-impact STEM career programs that support the next generation of engineers and applied scientists within Australia. You’ll also lead our growing international advocacy, positioning ATSE and Australia as a trusted adviser and lead commentator on some of the world’s most complex challenges, including as part of the leadership of the International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences (CAETS).

The Director, Strategic Engagement works closely with our Fellows, key stakeholders, media and all ATSE staff, and in particular with the CEO and President.

The role is fast-paced and hands-on as well as strategic, and leads a talented and committed team of communications and events specialists, providing guidance to nurture positive relationships with our Fellows, and proactively identify and shape advocacy opportunities delivering compelling and strong news and social media campaigns.

Experience and skills for success

This is a senior leadership role within the organisation responsible for providing strategic counsel on communication and engagement issues. We’re looking for someone who is collaborative, proactive and has an established track record in crafting and executing strategic communications.

To deliver this role successfully you’ll need to: 

  • exhibit a leadership style that is values driven, nurturing and reflective on your practice to develop cohesive high-performance teams that enjoy strong psychological safety.

  • possess 10+ year’s experience leading successful strategic communication campaigns at a national level that demonstrate impact, skill, creativity and a deep understanding of media relations and issues management.

  • have an interest in and an understanding of the issues facing science, technology, and engineering-dependent sectors in Australia and overseas.

  • superior influencing and communication skills to enable fruitful professional relationships both internally and externally.

  • Exceptional writing skills and a knack for influential story-telling.

  • demonstrated experience managing budgets to achieve events that are financially sustainable.

  • support a thriving values-informed workplace culture embracing continuous improvement and role modelling our values to enable all staff to contribute and achieve.
