ACT Down Syndrome & Intellectual Disability (DSID) aims to improve the quality of life for people living with intellectual disability by providing support and information to their families, carers, schools, employers and other organisations.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join our team in Pearce ACT. This person will work directly with people with intellectual disability, their families and support networks to support engagement and participation with the wider Canberra community. This position will work with people of all ages (early years through to aged) from all different backgrounds, including ATSI and CALD.

The ideal candidate will be experienced in working with children and families and have a strong understanding of support options and services (both NDIS and mainstream) in the ACT and surrounding region. They will be able to work independently and part of a team as well as have excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills. They will have the skills and capacity to impact positively on the life of people with intellectual disability and their families.

This position is offered for 3 - 5 days per week under the SCHADS Award (Level 6) until December 2026.

Eligibility

Essential

  • Relevant Tertiary qualifications in Social Work, Psychology, Social Welfare, Social Science, Education or an allied health position (speech therapist, occupational therapist) is essential.
  • A minimum 1 – 2 years post-graduate experience working with families in the ACT. Demonstrated experience working with people with disability highly desirable.
  • High levels of attention to detail and accurate record keeping.
  • Current drivers licence essential, including access to a private vehicle for work purposes.
  • Prior to commencing this role, a current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required.
  • Prior to commencing this role, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.

Highly Desirable

  • Lived experience of disability or extensive work experience within the disability sector.
  • First Aid Certificate.
