The Role

ActionAid Australia is seeking a dynamic Community Mobiliser to join the Campaigns and Policy Team. The position is responsible for coordinating ActionAid Australia’s community mobilising and partnership strategy, which aims to build a movement to engage Australians to take action to advance global climate justice and gender equality. This includes supporting and growing ActionAid’s Activist Network, coordinating campaign mobilisations and events, building community partnerships, and conducting trainings. The Community Mobiliser will also contribute to the development of ActionAid Australia’s ongoing campaign strategy with the Campaigns and Policy team and be part of our efforts to build a strong feminist movement in Australia. This position reports to the Head of Campaigns and Policy.

ActionAid’s existing Activist Network consists of groups in Sydney and Melbourne, each led by volunteer Group Coordinator(s).

Key Roles and Responsibilities

Strategy:

  • Contributing to the development of ActionAid’s community mobilising strategy to engage and retain existing activists and grow outreach
  • Participating in the development of campaign strategy to ensure that ActionAid activists have meaningful opportunities to take action and help deliver impact
  • Contribute to the organisation's feminist movement-building strategy

Training, activist support, engagement:

  • Supporting Group Coordinators to coordinate and engage their groups, develop annual plans, and deliver effective campaign actions
  • Supporting office-based Activist Support Volunteer to recruit and induct new activists and tasks related to strategy implementation
  • Developing an activist training program and coordinating the delivery of it, which includes building connections between activists, ActionAid, and the women we work with overseas
  • Developing leadership and training capacity in activists
  • Coordinating communication and collaboration between Sydney and Melbourne activists and Group Coordinators, including active participation at the annual Assembly and retreats
  • Maintaining activist database, tracking actions, reporting, and evaluation
  • Ensuring all work of activists is in line with ActionAid’s strategy, values, code of conduct and volunteer policies

Campaign mobilisations:

  • Developing and implementing recruitment and mobilisation plans for campaign actions and tactics
  • Delivering actions, stunts, and events in line with campaign strategy

Sector movement building:

  • Supporting the delivery of organisational events that engage activists and build movement e.g. ActionAid’s Annual Assembly
  • Support the development of partnerships that can strengthen our outreach and impact in Australia
  • Contribute to sector-wide campaigning activities

Other:

  • Creating content in line with the strategy and responsibilities
  • Other duties as delegated

Requirements

Required:

  • A strong commitment to ActionAid’s vision, purpose, and values, including feminist leadership
  • A commitment to diversity and experience working with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • At least three years of experience with community organising or movement building, including involvement in the development of strategy
  • Previous experience in delivering training and facilitation
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, computer literacy skills including the ability to produce content to mobilise people to take action
  • Strong project management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage pressure and competing priorities
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills, including the ability to motivate others, to work as part of a team, and with other stakeholders like partners and volunteers
  • A high degree of initiative and self-drive
  • The ability to travel overseas if required

Desirable:

  • Experience using a campaign database like Campaign Monitor, ActionNetwork, or NationBuilder (we use Campaign Monitor)
  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline
