Role Summary

The Member Services Officer provides advice and support to AEU members to resolve queries and issues, explaining their entitlements and rights to them regarding workplace relations, workplace health and safety and their roles in preschools, schools and TAFE.

Key Responsibilities

The Member Services Officer will work with a team of Organisers and is responsible to the Branch Secretary for the following:

Providing tailored advice and strategies to support member queries.

  • Being rostered as a duty officer to the Member Services Group to advise members on matters arising from their employment.
  • Providing correct and accurate advice in a polite, courteous and respectful manner to promote good public relations and the professional image of the AEU SA Branch.
  • Providing appropriate advice and assistance to members on individual grievances as referred by the Member Services Group (phone advice line) or as assigned by the Branch Secretary.
  • Working in collaboration with Organisers and Industrial Research Officers, as directed by the Lead Organiser and Branch Secretary.
  • Drafting correspondence to assist members to resolve grievances.
  • Negotiating the efficient resolution of an AEU member’s grievance at the workplace level, or with the management of employing authorities.
  • Referring industrial matters and disputes to the Branch Secretary to determine allocation or next steps.
  • Developing materials to effectively empower members throughout grievance handling.
  • Undertaking efficient and effective industrial research.
  • Maintaining accurate records of communication kept in the AEU database and other platforms.
  • Committing to the AEU SA Branch values and operating in line with AEU SA staff policies.
  • Undertaking such other duties as are outlined in the Administrative Officers' common job specification.

The Australian Education Union has a wide industrial coverage in government schools, preschools, and TAFE SA in South Australia.

Administrative Officers are appointed by AEUSA Branch Council for the term of office as specified in the job advertisement. A successful applicant is eligible for appointment for further terms.

Applicants for an administrative officer position should provide evidence of skills, experience and knowledge relevant to the position for which they are applying. Written applications will be considered by a Review Committee which will recommend a preferred applicant for appointment by Branch Council. The review committee will comprise:

President or nominee

Branch Secretary or nominee

Up to three nominees of Branch Council

Notwithstanding any decision of the Review Committee, an applicant who is a member of the AEUSA can bring their nomination personally to the attention of Branch Council.

A formal resolution of Branch Council is required to appoint an Administrative Officer. The appointment process is set out in full in AEU Federal Branch Rule 21.
