About Action on Poverty

Action on Poverty (AOP) is an independent, secular, nonprofit international development organisation with over 50 years’ experience and well-established grassroots global networks. During 2022-23 our projects reached 184,686 people in 14 countries across Africa, Asia, and the Pacific.

OUR VISION

All people thriving in a world without poverty.

OUR PURPOSE

To be the catalyst that mobilises and collaborates with changemakers globally to create environments free from poverty in which communities flourish.

We partner with changemakers in local communities around the world to convert new or innovative ideas into scalable, evidence based and cost-effective solutions that address the root causes of poverty. We work hand-in-hand with our partner communities, tailoring our support and solutions to meet their needs and priorities.

OUR APPROACH

Poverty has many root causes and prevents communities from flourishing. Poverty can impede health, education, financial security, access to resources, social equality, healthy environments, justice and fairness.

AOP seeks to tackle global poverty by being a catalyst for identifying, testing, scaling, and launching innovative and impactful development initiatives. We facilitate a collaborative environment with a range of global changemakers, including community representatives and social entrepreneurs, philanthropists, and researchers. We provide these changemakers with the resources and expertise to co- design and deliver groundbreaking solutions that eliminate poverty in our partner communities.

Together with our partners, we have deployed innovative technologies to reduce dengue, helped children access free and effective treatment for clubfoot, and implemented award-winning models for social enterprise.

With innovative approaches, a commitment to sustainability, and a passion for empowering communities, AOP is leading the charge towards a near future where the traditional aid and development paradigm will be turned on its head.

AOP is fully accredited with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and a member of the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID). Our initiatives all contribute to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

About the Role

The AOP Board of Directors is a skills-based board, and we are currently seeking a director with financial leadership governance skills and experience who is passionate about building a new community of changemakers doing aid and development differently.

Regular board and sub-committee meetings are conducted throughout the year from Sydney, with a remote attendance option available.

All board positions are voluntary.
