The Aboriginal Family Legal Services (WA) aims to provide free, culturally secure legal support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims and survivors of family violence and/or sexual assault.

We are seeking an experienced and qualified Family Advocate who is interested in being part of the AFLS team in our South Hedland office on Kariyarra Country on a fixed term contract.

As an AFLS Family Advocate, you will be responsible for delivering comprehensive case management and support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients within remote and local communities.

Role and Responsibilities include:

  • Start to finish case management services
  • Preparation of risk management and safety plans for clients
  • Referrals to external stakeholders
  • Development of relationships with stakeholders and agencies for the purpose of service delivery and client referrals.
  • Work collaboratively with Solicitors to prepare reports for legal matters
  • Provide support to the clients whist accessing our services.  

To be considered for this position you need to meet the following criteria:

ESSENTIAL

  • Certificate 3 or 4 in Community Services or equivalent
  • Trained in trauma informed practice
  • Experience with Department of Child Protection
  • Ability to interact with Aboriginal people in remote and rural communities
  • Demonstrated case management experience of one on one support to clients
  • An understanding of family/domestic violence and sexual assault
  • Able to travel on outreach to remote communities
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently
  • Good communication and computer skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Ability to work within a legal service

DESIRABLE

  • Experience working with Aboriginal people and knowledge surrounding Aboriginal culture (e.g. kinship system, child-rearing, intergenerational trauma and more)
  • Work experience within remote Aboriginal communities

ESSENTIAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Current ‘C’ Class WA Driver’s License
  • Current Police Clearance Certificate
  • Current Working with Children Check
