The Aboriginal Family Legal Services (WA) aims to provide free, culturally secure legal support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims and survivors of family violence and/or sexual assault.

We are seeking Solicitors for our office in the Goldfields. We have two roles available.

This is an opportunity to jump start your career in social justice and make a difference in the lives of survivors of family violence and their children. We are seeking motivated solicitors passionate about stopping family violence and making a difference in the lives of victim/survivors. You will work in a multidisciplinary team providing legal, social and community outcomes. 

AFLS assists Aboriginal survivors of family violence in the areas of family law, care and protection, restraining orders, and criminal injuries compensation. Our regional lawyers gain extensive experience in a range of complex legal areas including representation in the Children’s Court, Magistrate’s Court and Family Court of Western Australia.

  • KAL MS: Managing Solicitor
    • The Managing Solicitor will work closely with our Regional Coordinator to deliver our services in Kalgoorlie and surrounding communities.
    • You will oversee a small team and report to the Principal Legal Officer who is located in Perth.
  • KAL SOL: Solicitor
    • The Solicitor will work closely with our Family Advocate and Community Engagement Worker to deliver culturally safe legal support in Kalgoorlie and surrounding communities.

Travel to Kalgoorlie is a one-hour flight from Perth. Or take the Prospector! The Prospector train runs every day between Kalgoorlie and Perth including weekends. Rental accommodation is available at less than Perth prices and with many young people starting their careers in Kalgoorlie, there is vibrant social scene, share housing opportunities and plenty of sporting and other after work activities to get involved in. 

Kalgoorlie is one of the most historic towns in Western Australia. Predominantly a mining town in the current day, the Goldfields area is the traditional lands of several Aboriginal groups and communities. Solicitors working in Kalgoorlie will be offered the chance to meet and connect with the people of this region and the position offers an amazing opportunity to experience the real outback of Australia. 

Our Kalgoorlie office provides services across the Goldfields, from the red dirt of Laverton and Leonora, down to the renowned beaches of Esperance in Western Australia. Voted one of the World’s Best Beaches, Esperance boasts the amazing Lucky Bay. Outreach to Esperance is one of the many perks of working for AFLS in Kalgoorlie. 

TO BE CONSIDERED YOU NEED TO MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

Essential:

  • Current legal practicing certificate from the Legal Practice Board of Western Australia, pursuant to the Legal Profession Act 2008 (WA).
  • Admitted, or eligible for admittance, to practice in the Supreme Court of Western Australia.
  • Experience working within family law, child protection, FVRO and CIC.
  • Excellent communication skills including oral and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal people.
  • Able to travel to remote areas to deliver services to clients and the community.
  • Practice Management Course Certificate (Essential to Managing Solicitor Role).

Desirable:

  • Experience in family law, care and protection matters, criminal injuries compensation and family violence restraining orders.
  • Advocacy Experience.

ESSENTIAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Current ‘C’ Class WA Driver’s Licence
  • Current National Police Clearance
  • Current Working with Children Check

Housing is not included.
