Our Opportunities

We are seeking talented and experienced officers to join the National Office for Child Safety to fill multiple vacancies across the branch at the APS4, APS5, and APS6 levels. Your work will contribute to developing and delivering measures under the National Strategy.

Key work priorities include, but are not limited to:

  • work to enhance support for victims and survivors of child sexual abuse 
  • enhancing community awareness and understanding of child sexual abuse, including through a national awareness raising campaign
  • engagement with child safety experts and advocates, including victims and survivors of child sexual abuse, peak bodies, and academics 
  • work to prevent, respond to, support and safeguard children with harmful sexual behaviours
  • improving child safety and wellbeing information sharing, including on Working With Children Checks
  • implementing national principles for improving child safe cultures and practices
  • preventing child sexual abuse offending and reoffending.

Work in the National Office for Child Safety involves close collaboration across the Commonwealth, with state and territory governments and the non-government sector.

Please note that the merit pool created from this recruitment process will also be used to fill similar vacancies within the Children and Families Division, including in the Family Law Branch and Family Safety Branch. Family Law and Family Safety both play a key role in ensuring that the family law system meets the needs of Australian families, and in ensuring the safety of participants within that system. They offer enthusiastic and dedicated officers an opportunity to make real change in a combined social and justice setting, by working to make our structures, law and policies protect and support the Australian community.

We are looking for people with a range of academic and professional backgrounds including in, but not limited to, communications, social work, education, criminology, law, law enforcement, data and evaluation, Commonwealth, state and territory government and civil society.

The National Office for Child Safety is seeking highly motivated candidates who thrive in busy, dynamic environments. To be successful in the role: 

  • you have a strong interest or experience in delivering policy and project outcomes
  • you can provide advice and create effective relationships with stakeholders 
  • you demonstrate the judgement and resilience to manage competing priorities, often within tight timeframes
  • you are adaptable to change, demonstrate flexibility and are able to quickly get across new material
  • you have the ability to develop strong research, analysis and writing skills, and are able to draft quality briefs, submissions, correspondence and other written material
  • you have good communication skills and are able to communicate clearly with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders
  • you can quickly develop the ability to engage with stakeholders, including non-government organisations and people with lived experience 
  • you are focused on team wellbeing and self-wellbeing
  • you are committed to diversity and to identifying the needs of all Australians, including children and young people, people with a lived experience of child sexual abuse, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people with disability, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and LGBTQIA+ people.

Candidates should be aware that the National Office for Child Safety has a focus on confronting issues. Successful applicants for the National Office for Child Safety will work on policies and initiatives concerning child sexual abuse. The ideal candidates will demonstrate resilience, sound emotional intelligence and a high degree of self-awareness and self-care.
