The Position

Reporting to the Director and as a member of the executive team, the Research Director, Systems and Services provides strategic leadership for the Institute’s research, evaluation and knowledge translation activities, managing multiple priorities to deliver and communicate policy relevant research that addresses and anticipates significant issues affecting families in Australia.

As an experienced, confident and engaging leader with exceptional interpersonal skills, you will bring vision, energy and an entrepreneurial approach. With an influential and credible voice, you will apply your track record in use of evidence-based approaches, well-developed stakeholder engagement skills,  knowledge of social policy, and understanding of government to advance the Institute’s research program, and accelerate positive outcomes for children, families and their communities. You will build and manage a diverse range of stakeholder relationships including funding bodies, policy makers, academics, sector leaders and consumer representatives. Your knowledge and experience of policy and/or subject matter in an area that is relevant to children and families will enable you to liaise with and provide robust evidence-based insights and and policy advice to key stakeholders.

Post graduate qualifications in a relevant field and experience at executive level in a research, evaluation and/or data-oriented function are required.

The Organisation

The Australian Institute of Family Studies (AIFS) is a Melbourne-based Australian Government statutory agency. It was established in 1980 under the Family Law Act 1975. AIFS’ mission is to conduct high-quality, impartial research into the wellbeing of Australian families, to inform government policy and to promote evidence-based practice in the family services sector.

AIFS also incorporates the Australian Gambling Research Centre (AGRC), which was established under the Gambling Measures Act 2012.  The AIFS Director governs AGRC’s operations.

AIFS operates within the portfolio of the Department of Social Services and is responsible to the Minister for Social Services.
