About All Things Equal
All Things Equal is an innovative social-enterprise providing purposeful paid employment, training and work-readiness for people with disability in the hospitality industry.
We run a classic Melbourne style social enterprise cafe with an a la carte, Kosher menu. We offer your most loved brunch dishes ranging from smashed avo to shakshuka. We also host occasional evening events and functions with tailored, seasonal menus.
Our cafe is staffed by our all abilities crew, who work hard and have pride in their roles at All Things Equal. Every member of our team is paid award-based wages, front-of-house and back-of-house.
We have two Chef opportunities at our Carlisle St, Balaclava cafe - Lead Chef and Sous Chef. These roles offer a rare opportunity for passionate and experienced Chefs wanting to be a part of an exciting business with purpose.
Lead Chef
The Lead Chef is a hands-on role, responsible for executing and delivering a high quality, fresh, seasonal menu to the customers who frequent our cafe. This includes:
- Kitchen Planning, Preparation & Production
- Menu design and development
- Preparing menu items and recipes, with support from the kitchen team
- Oversight of all food preparation and presentation
- Team Management and Engagement, including providing individualised training, support and guidance to our back of house staff to develop their skills and confidence in the kitchen
- Ensuring exceptional standards are maintained
- Ensuring the kitchen and food preparation practices adhere to Kashrut regulations
This is a full time role, and ability to work Sundays is essential.
Sous Chef
The Sous Chef will work alongside our Lead Chef to execute and deliver a high quality, fresh, seasonal menu to the customers who frequent our cafe. This includes:
- Supporting the day-to-day operations and running of the kitchen, including the execution of daily tasks and checklists
- Preparing menu items and recipes, with support from the kitchen team
- Providing individualised training, support and guidance to our back of house staff to develop their skills and confidence in the kitchen
- Ensuring exceptional standards are maintained
- Ensuring the kitchen and food preparation practices adhere to Kashrut regulations
This is a full time role, and ability to work Sundays will be highly regarded.
Skills and Experience
- Proven experience as a Head Chef or Sous Chef
- 2 + years of solid cafe experience
- Extensive knowledge of various cooking techniques, ingredients and preferably, Kosher food principals and regulations
- Ability to motivate, mentor and support an incredible back of house team, all with a set of unique qualities with and without disability
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- An understanding of the disability space and knowledge and appreciation of the need to provide individualised support
- Must harness patience and encourage a supportive, positive team environment
- Support high quality food safety standards, hygiene and OH&S in the kitchen
- Enthusiastic to grow and support our vision
Qualifications and Certifications
- Certificate III in Commercial Cookery (or equivalent)
- Level 1 Safe Food Handling certificate
- A current First Aid certificate
- Valid Visa and Australian working rights
- Working With Childrens Check and Police Check (or willing to obtain)
