Primary Purpose of the role

The primary responsibility of the position is to assist in the delivery of high-quality legal support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients by performing a range of administration and research tasks as required.

About the role

The Paralegal will be responsible for:

  • Providing and coordinating a high level of paralegal support for solicitors in the Family Violence Prevention Unit.
  • Provide high-level paralegal support for solicitors, including court assistance, document preparation, and research.
  • Assist with client interviews, draft legal documents, and liaise with various agencies and courts.
  • Maintain confidentiality, organize files, and manage statistical data using appropriate systems.
  • Offer administrative support, including word processing, document handling, and general office tasks.
  • Work collaboratively within the team and contribute to efficient office operations.
  • Uphold ALS objectives, maintain professional competence, and respect Aboriginal cultural practices.
  • Comply with ALS policies, procedures, and relevant legislation while performing all duties ethically.

About you

We’re looking for someone who brings:

Essential

  • Formal paralegal qualifications, or currently undertaking a Law Degree.
  • Knowledge and understanding of contemporary issues Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are facing.
  • In-depth knowledge of support and referral services available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients involved in domestic and family violence and/or family law.
  • Excellent research and problem-solving skills.
  • Self-motivated with ability to work with minimal supervision and a willingness to complete administrative tasks.
  • Proven experience with Microsoft Suite computer skills, video-conferencing software

Desirable

  • Previous experience working in an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community-based organisation.
