Volunteer - WA Activism Leadership Committee Member

Amnesty International Australia

As a member of the WA Activism Leadership Committee, you’ll play a lead role in growing, motivating, and sustaining local human rights activism in WA. In particular your role on the WA Activism Leadership Committee (ALC) will focus on connecting with and supporting the 14 Amnesty Action Groups and Networks across Western Australia.

Local Action Groups and Networks are the driving force behind our People Powered Movement and are integral in leading grassroots human rights campaigning in their communities. Some of the things our awesome Action Groups and Networks around the country get up to include letter writing in solidarity with persecuted human rights defenders, hosting events in their community like movie screenings or speaking tours, engaging with local media, gathering petition signatures at their weekend market, meeting with their local MPs, writing submissions to government calling for human rights change and organising vigils and protests.

Week to week you may be doing things like providing individual support and mentoring for our action groups as they undertake their invaluable grassroots activism work, building a sense of community and collaboration between different action groups and networks in WA and working alongside your fellow WA ALC members to support activism in the region.

All Activism Leadership Committee Members must be Amnesty International Australia Financial Members in order to stand for nomination.

Some of the things you’ll be responsible for in this role include:

  • Responding to requests for support from WA action groups and networks as they undertake their grassroots activism activities
  • Proactively reaching out to WA action groups and networks to encourage and facilitate activism on key Amnesty campaigns
  • Building a sense of community and collaboration between different action groups and networks in WA
  • Building a culture of ongoing support, effective communication and appreciation for activists and action groups in your region

While working with local action groups and networks will be your main focus, you’ll also work with your fellow WA ALC members on

  • Prioritising Amnesty International Australia’s 2025 Vision and objectives and adhere to policies including the Values and Behaviour Charter, ALC Charter and Constitution
  • Assisting in the administration and running of the ALC
  • Managing your regional budget and assess all budget requests put forward by other activists in the region
  • In collaboration with the Regional President, the Activism and Membership Committee and the National Board, engage with activist feedback and support resolution of any conflicts or concerns

The perfect person for this role is someone who is passionate about human rights and grassroots activism, is a great team player and is passionate about building connected and supported communities. Applications are open to candidates based anywhere in Western Australia.

We strive to provide a welcoming, engaging and meaningful experience for all of our activists. ALCs are the heart of grassroots activism in their region. In this key Leadership position you’ll work closely with your fellow ALC members, the Movement Team, and with our awesome activists and partners on the ground. You’ll pick up valuable skills and experiences in community organising, regional strategic planning and grassroots movement building. You'll gain incredible insights into working in an international human rights organisation to empower and support activists and build power on the ground for our key human rights campaigns. You'll be provided with training and induction within your first few months as an ALC member as well as mentoring and support from staff and fellow ALC Members.
