The Australian Maritime Officers Union (AMOU) is the oldest continuously registered union in the country. We represent maritime professionals employed on shore in port authorities, port operations, port service providers & stevedoring companies and Officers at sea in towage, pilotage, offshore energy, blue water and domestic shipping. The AMOU has offices in Sydney (HQ) and Fremantle and has an experienced team of seven Industrial Officers nationwide.

THE POSITION

The AMOU is seeking a highly motivated, member-focused individual with preferably trade union Industrial Officer experience.

The successful candidate will be based in the AMOU Sydney Office. Initially s/he will undertake duties including familiarisation with current enterprise agreements, membership demographics and the membership database, meeting staff members, the Executive Council team and members in their workplaces. S/he will then take on enterprise agreement negotiations, disputes involving AMOU members and Fair Work Commission advocacy duties.

The position is a full-time, open-ended appointment with a six-month probationary period.

The terms and conditions of employment for AMOU staff are covered by a contemporary Collective Agreement.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Recruiting members, mapping and organising workplaces;
  • Visiting members in their workplace, including on vessels;
  • Negotiating Enterprise Agreements;
  • Advocacy for members both individually and collectively on all workplace matters;
  • Pursuing the interests of members through agreed dispute settlement procedures;
  • Preparing cases and presenting them at relevant tribunals such as the Fair Work Commission;
  • Providing advice to members on workplace matters such as Enterprise Agreement interpretation, wages queries, grievance matters, termination of employment, workplace health and safety, workers compensation etc;
  • Assisting with the design and delivery of union training;
  • Working collaboratively with officials of other unions to advance the interests of our members;
  • Preparing written reports as required; and,
  • Other duties as directed by the Executive Officer.

Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated commitment to unionism and a belief in social justice;
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in industrial relations advocacy;
  • Detailed knowledge of Australian industrial law and the operations of the Fair Work Commission;
  • Experience in bargaining for Enterprise Agreements;
  • Willingness to travel (sometimes overnight) when required;
  • Ability to work under pressure with limited supervision, and,
  • High level computer skills.

Highly Desirable

  • Possess maritime qualifications;
  • Knowledge of contemporary issues in Australia’s maritime industry;
  • Experience in a similar position; and,
  • Experience in policy development
