The Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union (AMWU) is a progressive, worker led organisation that aims to build workers’ power and organise workers to win.
The AWMU is active in manufacturing industries including shipbuilding, defence & aerospace, rail, and mining & engineering services. It has established Industry Committees comprised of union members from around the country and each with a Coordinator to organise within them.
The AMWU seeks to employ a Research & Planning Officer to support the Union’s activities across our industries, and to support AMWU’s National campaigns.
The position is located in Melbourne.
Principal Responsibilities
Duties will include:
- Supporting Industry Committees and their Coordinators;
- Developing public and industry policy that benefits the union’s membership;
- Formulation of the union’s operational plans for different industries;
- Conducting corporate, industry and related research;
- Researching and reporting on issues affecting workers in those industries;
- Preparing submissions for Senate Inquiries and for internal purposes;
- Working closely with state branches, delegates and members;
- Project management; and
- Representing the union in different forums, e.g Parliamentary Delegations.
The position is a 12-month fixed term contract with a possibility for a full-time position for the suitable candidate. Some interstate travel is required for this role.
Selection Criteria
- A demonstrated commitment to trade unionism and the interests of workers in the manufacturing industry;
- Skills in corporate research and organisational planning are essential;
- A keen interest in public and industry policy;
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
- To plan ahead and be proactive;
- Ability to work with a range of people and manage competing interests;
- Ability to present presentations in front of large groups of people;
- Experience in one of the sectors covered by the union’s industries is desirable; and
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
