We are growing and going from strength to strength in the NT Region. We’re looking for a Union Organiser for our NT office based in Darwin.
The Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union is one of Australia’s largest Union’s in the manufacturing sector. We cover workers in both public and private sectors working in the manufacturing, maintenance, servicing, design and development of metal ng, design and development of metal, print, vehicle and other products, in the manufacturing, metal, mining, construction, printing, vehicle and transport and related industries.
The AMWU has a position available for a Regional Organiser based in our Darwin Office. The position will involve regional and some interstate travel. The position involves working with members, potential members, Union delegates and other Officials and Officers of the AMWU and other Unions and employers.
Salary Package $99,938 (plus $5,772 regional allowance) and a Union Vehicle.
Duties Include:
- Recruitment of new members in existing and new workplaces
- Grow and maintain union density in existing workplaces
- Build and develop strong union structures in new and existing workplaces, including identifying and developing new and existing Delegates and HSRs
- Ensure that all delegates participate in the union education program and that opportunities are promoted for delegates to use skills learnt and to participate in further union education
- Identify and mentor workplace activists
- Develop and Implement workplace organising plans
- Utilise effective advocacy, negotiation, campaigning, record keeping, note taking and public speaking skills to ensure that the union campaign objectives are met
- Understand and utilise appropriate knowledge of industrial legislation, and industrial tactics and strategy, to ensure that industrial action is effectively and appropriately developed, used and managed
- Attend and support enterprise bargaining negotiations ensuring that union agreements meet the campaign objectives of the union
- Understand and employ corporate campaigning, research and critical analysis tools to ensure that the union campaign objectives are met and are effectively and efficiently targeted
- Utilise and maintain record keeping through the Growth Indicator Database or agreed equivalent
- Respond to workplace industrial issues
- Attend workplace negotiations
- Follow policies and procedures of the AMWU
- Adhere to requirements of the Fair Work Act, WHS Act and other Acts and Instruments affecting your employment

Essential Selection Criteria
- Demonstrated commitment to trade unionism and social justice
- Excellent listening, verbal communication and interpersonal skills – ability to establish rapport, explore issues, encourage critical analysis and gain commitment to action
- Ability to lead, motivate, develop and mobilise potential union members, existing union member and workplace activists
- Ability to analyse issues/problems and develop strategies to deal with them
- Ability to deal professionally with diverse groups of people including members, delegates and Union Officials.
- Current Driver’s Licence
- Demonstrated ability to compile and write reports and draft correspondence and clauses
