The Aboriginal Engagement Worker (AEW):

  • Supports Aboriginal victims of crime to access information, culturally safe and localised services and supports.
  • Provides secondary consultation to other Victim Assistance Program staff supporting Aboriginal victims of crime who have chosen to access mainstream services.
  • Works together with local Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs) and/or other services Aboriginal people access, to build trust and engagement with local communities and to address systemic barriers for Aboriginal victims’ participation in the criminal justice system.

What is VAP?

The Victims Assistance Program aims to:

  • Provide quality services that support the needs of victims so they can recover and thrive.
  • Assist and advocate on behalf of victims navigating the criminal justice system to enable victims to be informed and empowered.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with key stakeholders to support the delivery of seamless and accessible services to victims of crime.

Knowledge and skills: 

  • Identify as a member of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. Anglicare Victoria considers that being Aboriginal or a Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational requirement for this position under sub-s 26(3) or s 28 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the issues and impacts potentially faced by people who have experienced a violent crime particularly those faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victims.
  • Strong understanding of case management principles and experience in case management including the provision of flexible supports in a range of community settings.
  • Knowledge and/or existing relationships with local and regional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander services.
  • Capacity for, and understanding of, the importance of resilience e.g., capacity to cope within a trauma related field, perseverance to achieve goals and capacity to stay calm under pressure.
  • Demonstrated capacity to communicate effectively and sensitively with a wide range of people, including children, young people, parents and professional staff, particularly in crisis, culturally diverse backgrounds and/or challenging situations.
  • Ability to work in a non-judgemental approach to a diverse range of people with a positive, warmth and constructive manner.  

Qualifications: 

Required:

  • Tertiary qualifications at minimum diploma level in Social Work, Human Services, Mental Health, Criminal Justice or a related field and/or experience within the community sector in a trauma related field.
  • Full Victorian Drivers Licence. Regular travel including some overnight stays throughout the Loddon Mallee region is part of the expectation of this role.
