Art Centre Manager - Warnayaka Art & Culture - Lajamanu

Arnhem Northern and Kimberley Artists

The art centre

Warnayaka Art is a remote community art and culture centre formed in 2007 and located approximately 900 km south of Darwin, in the north Tanami Desert. It is an art and culture centre full of activity, with a large air-conditioned artist studio that is run by the Warlpiri staff. Its key assets are the people and the artworks they create.

Historically, Lajamanu is renowned for the vision of its founding artists and their spearheading of two-way cultural leadership and education. The historical significance of the art and culture centre can be built on to raise the profile of the centre and its artists, through projects which bring together cultural practice , historical and contemporary context, artistic expression, skills development and audience engagement.

A board of nine directors work closely with the Manager in planning and maintaining a sustainable organisation; and a high degree of diligence around financial management is necessary to continue securing long-term funding from key funding bodies. This art and culture centre has a high degree of financial stability, normally securing 5-year contracts for its core funding. It has a current active membership of around 55 people and represents about 160 Warlpiri artists.

Warnayaka Art is an Aboriginal-owned social enterprise regulated by ORIC; and is a registered charity with not-for-profit status.
