Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA
Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA is the global justice organisation of the Australian trade union movement. We work globally in partnership for the achievement of dignity at work, social justice, economic equality and the realisation of human rights. We work to achieve this through strong unions and social movements, sustainable development programs, global solidarity, and support at times of crisis.
OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY
To coordinate the “Asbestos. Not here. Not Anywhere” campaign (hereafter the Campaign) as per the agreed Campaign strategic plan. The Campaign has Australian, International, and country level responsibilities, with a focus on SE Asia and works in collaboration with a range of Governments, national and global trade unions, UN agencies, networks, experts and individuals. Focus countries include Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Indonesia among others especially those taking part in the Indo Pacific Economic Framework agreement.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
- Advise and support campaign teams (APHEDA staff as applicable and partners) in target countries in delivery of their agreed programs and activity plans, and in planning, monitoring, reporting, learning and evaluation.
- Represent Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA and the Campaign under direction of the Executive Officer and in cooperation with Senior Advisor, to key donors and stakeholders such as DFAT, ACTU, ASSEA and supporting Australian trade unions and institutions such as ADDRI.
- Support related aspects of the ASSEA National Strategy and DFAT agreements as agreed.
- Analyse and promote the latest global evidence, good practice and research related to asbestos hazards and disease and coordinate with the campaigns’ ACTU technical specialist on asbestos and OSH in regard to specific imputes into campaign events and the provision of technical advice to teams and partners.
- Oversee all aspects of the government donor funded aspects of the Campaign, including annual plans, annual reports and due diligence checks related to child protection, counter terrorism, and prevention of sexual exploitation and harassment.
- Support learning and exchanges through information sharing between ban asbestos network partners.
- In cooperation with the Senior Advisor, act as focal point for Union Aid Abroad APHEDA in asbestos campaign networks regionally and globally including BWI, ITUC, IBAS, ABAN and other development partners, such as WHO, ILO.
- Maintain and where possible build the donor base of the Campaign.
- Facilitate and support asbestos delegations from SE Asia to visit Australia and take part in learning and technical exchange program.
- Facilitate focus on gender and disability inclusion within the Campaign
SELECTION CRITERIA:
Essential
- At least 5 years’ program or campaign management experience
- At least 5 years’ experience working in international development context including in Project Cycle Management
- Capable of working effectively in fast paced and challenging environments.
- Demonstrated commitment to union values – fairness, compassion, equity and the dignity of workers – alongside a dedication to and good understanding of labour movement and social movement dynamics, including trade union development.
- Well-developed interpersonal and leadership skills, an ability to represent Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA, to build and maintain relationships and networks effectively in support of Union Aid Abroad - APHEDA’s goals, and to make informed judgements about labour and community organising.
- Understanding of child protection and ability to contribute to a child-safe organisation.
- A team player with a demonstrated ability to work independently, within the context of a plan, and having a track record of achieving targets.
- Computer literate, including good knowledge of office information technology applications, including spreadsheets, and presentation software.
- Willingness to travel and work in SE Asia
- Relevant degree or higher education qualification
Desirable
- Work experience in SE Asia
- Understanding of occupational health and safety good practice and or regulations
Other terms
- This position can be located in Sydney or Melbourne or South East Asia (by agreement)
- This position will involve frequent international travel throughout South East Asia
- Temporary, full time (3 year contract) with the possibility of ongoing employment
