- The role is being advertised as on-going seasonal work:
- Apr – Nov (Dry Season) 3 weeks on site Blue Lagoon Ranger Station – 1 week off
- Dec – Mar (Wet Season) 3 weeks on site Aurukun Head Office - 1 week off
- Dec – Jan Mandatory Shutdown (5 weeks)
- This position will be offered as a contract opportunity for a period of two years, with possibility to be made ongoing during this term.

Owned entirely by Southern Wik Traditional Owners, APN Cape York facilitates the return of Traditional Owners to their Southern Wik homelands in a manner that is culturally, environmentally, and economically sustainable.
APN Rangers implement Indigenous Land and Sea Management with a strong focus on conservation interventions in Olive Ridley marine turtles, marine debris, weeds management, feral animal, cattle and their impacts. Support building continuing Indigenous capability on-Country through all APN Cape York Programs.
APN Cape York collaborates with a range of partners on programs that enable Traditional Owners to create social, cultural and economic impacts for the Aurukun community and pursue Traditional Owners empowerment aspirations.
The Job
- Lead in building organisational capability by motivating and generating enthusiasm for exceeding expectations. Foster a harmonious, supportive, and cooperative team-based work environment that recognises and rewards achievement.
- Lead and adhere to a high level of Work Place Health and Safety protocols, procedures and policies. Develop a strong safety culture with a strong approach to auditing and record keeping of all safe work methods.
- Develop and deliver systems, procedures and standards to support the delivery of APN Cape York's Biodiversity Conservation Program and strategic directions with a strong focus on developing and innovating environmental monitoring.
- Proactively build and sustain positive relationships with Rangers and Traditional Owners. Use consultative processes with internal and external stakeholders including members of the community, other government agencies (Local, State and Federal) and industries relevant to the delivery of the APN Cape York Biodiversity Conservation Program.
- Demonstrate a high level of professionalism, integrity, and customer service with the ability to communicate confidently at various levels and with a range of audiences.
- Ensure reporting requirements for licences, permits and projects are completed accurately and in accordance with Cape York's Biodiversity Conservation Program schedule of works.
- Ability to prepare and/or coordinate, review and progress program plans, submissions, reports and correspondence. Provide standardised weekly reports and to the Homeland Operations Manager, General Manager and Board of Directors when required.
- Demonstrated experience in managing, maintaining, and repairing assets associated with a ranger program including 4WD vehicles off-road driving, ATVs, Kubota, chainsaws, mowers, whipper snippers, drones, monitoring equipment such as GPS and audio/visual recording equipment, remote safety communications etc.
- Demonstrated experience in working in remote Indigenous discrete communities with Traditional Owners that use English as a second language and have strong values in cultural and Country protocols.
- Demonstrated experience in the use of all Windows applications and ability to self-teach intuitive online applications and applications appropriate for environmental management including but not limited to Power BI and other data and content management systems and dashboards.
- Demonstrated interest in digital capability for environmental management including GIS.
- Ability to live and work remotely from home for extended periods depending on requirements of the project/tasks.
- Hold a current C class Driver Licence
- A MR/HR truck license and current Coxswain Grade 1 Marine Licence is highly desirable.
- Firearms and drone licenses will be well regarded.
