Indigenous Protected Area Coordinator - Umuwa / Mimili

  • Position Level: Level 3: Salary in accordance with the APY Enterprise Agreement

  • Location: Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands, SA


Working with Anangu in spectacular country, the IPA project uses traditional ecological knowledge and contemporary land management practices to deliver IPA programs in the APY lands.

This role is to organise and coordinate and engage ranger and IPA Steering committee activity and support the Warru Translocation into the ASB IPA area. Regular liaison with traditional owners, IPA rangers, the Warru coordinator land management staff and contractors is required.

The position works under the guidance of the Land Management Program Manager and implements the annual works program which has been developed from the IPA working on country plan and the IPA Steering Committee. 

At times you may work in other Land Management areas and help support other LM programs.

Note this is a physically demanding role requiring long walks over rugged terrain, and may require carrying knapsacks and working in harsh conditions and some camping out. There is also a high percentage of time driving in 4WD vehicles over rugged areas.

Main Duties:

Work in a cross-cultural environment

  • Together with the Steering Committee and other Land Management staff plan the works program with regards to the IPA Caring for Country Plan for the financial year
  • Regularly communicate with Anangu Traditional Owners about work in the IPA program
  • Employ communication techniques appropriate to cross-cultural environments
  • Day-to-day involvement with Anangu Ranger team, provide management of their activities
  • Participating in and facilitate a range of meetings with Traditional Owners, IPA Rangers, APY Staff and External Stakeholders
  • Maintains networks outside the Lands in the field of NRM and Indigenous Land Management, including with scientists, experts, other ranger groups and organisations

Manage Field operations

  • Ensure all APY Work Health Safety policies are adhered to during all activities, including remote safety check-in procedures and 4WD vehicle safety and use.
  • Ensuring all field work equipment, project resources, vehicle and APY property are maintained in good condition
  • Engaging with consultants, researchers and contractors to run specific field and training activities with IPA rangers
  • Managing operational logistics, such as timely sourcing, ordering and maintaining supplies, staffing needs, vehicles, tools and equipment
  • Facilitate training opportunities for Rangers, including on-the-job training in natural resource management and connecting with formal trainers such as community TAFE and Land Management’s Conservation Land Management Cert II program
  • Weekly field work with Ranger teams in line with the annual works program, including:
    • patch burning
    • threatened species monitoring using appropriate methods (camera-traps, long-walk searches, tracks/scats, photo-points)
    • cultural site management
    • pest plant and animal management
    • Put in place the requirements for survey of threatened species and the requirements for survey teams to work effectively on site.

Project data collection and reporting

  • Using different technologies (IPad, photos, GIS), collect and store data on works and activities
  • Train Anangu Rangers in data collection procedures
  • With guidance from Program Manager, prepare timely project reports and applications as required
  • With Anangu, promote the IPA work through newsletters, radio, social media, presentations and interactions with community and school groups

Project human resource management and budget management

  • Carry out all procedures relating to the financial and human resource management of ranger teams, including submitting timesheets, handling pay enquiries and maintaining employee records
  • Monitoring the project budget and expenditure of funds, including purchasing of project supplies, under the guidance of the Program Manager
  • Carry out a range of additional Land Management tasks, as directed, such as helping other Ranger teams with large field trips and policy development

Working Relationships

  • Works under the guidance and reports to and receives direction from the Land Management Program Manager
  • Works in close collaboration with the APY Land Management Ecologist to ensure ecological goals and data collection procedures are being met
  • Works with other APY staff as directed, including APY Anthropology
  • Maintains good working relationships with traditional owners of Aboriginal land, native title holders and residents of other Aboriginal communities.
  • Maintains good working relationships with other Government and Non-government service providers on the APY Lands


  • History of work in a similar role
  • Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment
  • Ability to work as a team member and under Anangu direction
  • Ability to work independently in carrying out position responsibilities
  • Ability to managing consultants, researchers and contractors to run specific field activities or training with Anangu Rangers
  • Experience of using different technologies (IPad, photos, GIS), collect and store data on all on-ground works and activities
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Good organisational, project and budget management skills
  • Ability to employ communication techniques appropriate to cross-cultural environments
  • Ability to live and work in a remote location and in extreme conditions
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable
  • Current SA or NT Driver’s Licence
  • Able to work in remote and difficult terrain
  • Ability to manage small teams


  • Certificate 111-IV or and or/ relevant experience in a relevant field
  • Relevant trade qualifications with industry experience 


  • Degree or Diploma in ecology or equivalent relevant field with relevant work related experience or work experience in team leadership role in similar environment
  • PC literacy
  • Previous experience working with Indigenous people
  • Project Management Skills
  • An understanding of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Land Rights Act 1981
  • Previous experience in the field desirable
  • 4WD experience or willing to learn

Work environment

  • To travel to Mimili from Umuwa on a Tuesday am and work with the ASB IPA community Tuesday - Thursday, requiring staying in Mimili Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
  • Work as required in Umuwa on a Monday and Friday

There may be some extended days of work at either location.
