About ARDS
ARDS Aboriginal Corporation has been working with Yolŋu communities in north-east Arnhem Land for 50 years. We are led by Senior Yolŋu. Our vision is for Yolŋu to engage with the Balanda world as equals. We try to help Yolŋu to be strong in Yolŋu culture, and strong in understanding Balanda culture. We learn from each other and try to work in Yolŋu ways.
About the Role
Our recent ILA funded Manikay Ŋupan project which documented, catalogued and shared our collection of traditional songlines, revealed a Manikay (songlines) collection in our care of much greater size and richness than was visible from our previously existing catalogue. This role will be responsible for setting up and populating an archive and access system that ensures knowledge custodians can control and access their language and culture materials.
Key Duties
- Contribute to the successful delivery of "Language and culture in our hands: Ensuring the longevity and accessibility of ARDS’ rich heritage" project.
- Ensure that project milestone data is recorded and contribute to project reports.
- Platform
- Implement an organisational metadata and storage system, ensuring that all language and cultural data is stored in orderly, secure, safe and future-proof ways.
- Policy & procedures
- In consultation with ARDS staff, develop organisational archive management procedures, and work with ARDS staff to ensure the procedures are understood and followed.
- Updating metadata
- Working together with Yolŋu staff and community members to create and update metadata where it is missing.
- Organise files & populating of platform
- Organise files into an orderly system, including identifying duplicate files, correcting naming aberrations, and ensuring that decisions and changes are tracked.
- External access
- Set-up a public access platform, to ensure that language and cultural custodians have access to their data. Ensure that permissions and protocols are embedded into the public access platform.
- Other related tasks as reasonably directed.
About You
- Demonstrated understanding of the value and importance of language and cultural heritage and experience in good archiving practices.
- High level attention to detail and ability to work independently.
- Strong computer and IT skills that create efficiencies when working with large volumes of data.
- Strong cross-cultural and interpersonal skills including facilitating good decision-making about language and cultural materials.
- Demonstrated ability to take direction from language and cultural custodians and follow cultural protocols.
Special requirements
The successful applicant will also be required to hold a current NT Working with Children Clearance Notice and undertake a Criminal History Check. However, a criminal history check will not exclude an applicant from the position unless it is relevant criminal history.
