AVCAT History and Purpose

The Australian Veterans’ Children Assistance Trust (AVCAT) is a national independent charity whose purpose is to provide tertiary education scholarships to children and grandchildren of ex-service men and women. The recipients of scholarships will have high financial need, be deserving and show academic potential.

AVCAT was established in 2003. It grew out of the former Vietnam Veterans’ Trust, established in 1985 to distribute the Australian share of the funds received from the Agent Orange legal settlement in the USA to Vietnam veterans and their dependents.

In 2003 the organisation was re-structured to focus on supporting the children of veterans through the administration and management of tertiary education scholarships. In 2024, AVCAT is helping over 260 scholars by providing financial assistance to enable them to study at a tertiary institution.
