About the Role

Community organising and a deep belief in the power of young people is at the heart of AYCC’s work. As an organiser at AYCC, you’ll play a key role in growing and supporting our national network of volunteers and local action groups. You will focus on a key state or region (e.g. QLD) and drive growth in the size and strength of AYCC’s grassroots networks. You’ll act as a mentor for leaders of local groups and coordinate trainings and events that build the skills and confidence of young people to take action for climate justice. You’ll also support volunteers to roll out our national campaign to leave fossil fuels in the ground.

You’ll work within a small team of 4-5 staff who all hold organising responsibilities at AYCC, and you’ll support a large network of volunteers in the relevant states/territories. You will focus on a key state or region, but also support national priorities that are shared across the team. No two days will be the same in this role. Your day-to-day work could look like meeting with volunteer leaders to do planning for their group, organising logistics for a large training summit, supporting volunteers to make phone calls to supporters, facilitating an online workshop, or helping to coordinate a national day of action on the campaign.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Roll out in-person and online training programs to build the skills and confidence of AYCC volunteers and grow our movement. This may include project management of events such as volunteer training camps, leaders retreats, schools summits, online workshops and volunteer inductions.
  • Provide direct support to volunteers by mentoring core leaders from two or three state/territory branches, building strong relationships and providing support to local group leaders in those regions as required. This may include supporting volunteers to design or adapt campaigning and community outreach tactics to the local context.
  • Identifying opportunities for our movement to grow and supporting new AYCC groups to form. This may include bringing new people in through campaign moments, engaging with external opportunities like university O-weeks or organising events to help build our movement.
  • Contribute to overall campaigning and organising strategy and roll out tactics to grow our grassroots movement and scale our campaign impact. This may include coordinating mobilisations in your state, participating in planning days, providing logistical support for campaign tactics, and recruiting volunteers to our movement through a range of outreach activities.
  • Assisting with additional whole-organisation priorities as needed, such as fundraising projects, grant-writing, high school specific events, campaign events and actions in solidarity with First Nations movements.

Your Core Skills and Attributes

We’re a youth organisation, so we don’t expect you to be an expert at everything. We’re open to hiring for this role at either an entry-level or a more senior level, depending on the candidates who apply. We’re committed to building the skills of the successful candidate and supporting you to grow. Even if you don’t fit all the attributes below, but are keen to learn, you should apply!

  • You’re passionate about climate justice and empowering young people to take collective action.
  • You have experience in community organising work (paid or voluntary). This means you have successfully grown the ‘people power’ of an organisation or social movement, by bringing people together, developing leaders and taking action together for justice.
  • You are skilled at building strong relationships with others and you see this as a core part of your work. You have an instinct for how to bring people together over a common cause. You work best as part of a team.
  • You’re organised! You are able to navigate the uncertainty of community organising and campaigning work by remaining purpose-driven, adaptable, focused, well-organised and on top of your work.
  • You are a confident communicator, and are skilled in having conversations which drive people to take action or get involved in the movement.
  • You can identify, recruit and inspire excellent leaders and you are focused on empowering others to lead rather than doing all the work yourself. You can support groups to set and achieve their own goals.
  • You have experience facilitating effective meetings and/or workshops, online or in person. You can move groups through discussion to decisions effectively.
  • You have a commitment to equity and justice, and have experience working as part of or in solidarity with traditionally marginalised communities.
  • You have or are eligible to apply for a professional Working With Children Check.

Bonus skills that would be useful in this role include: event management, campaigning skills, training delivery & activist education, lobbying, project management and skills navigating conflict.

If you have lived experience of being part of a community that is heavily impacted by climate change, gas extraction and/or the transition beyond fossil fuels, your experience would also be highly valuable for this role.

Travel and Hours

AYCC is a national organisation with volunteers and staff in different locations across the continent. Throughout the year, you will be required to travel to perform the duties of the position without any additional remuneration. Your travel expenses will be covered. You’ll be able to take advantage of AYCC’s flexible and remote working policies, though you may be required to work outside of ordinary hours during key moments or events. The role may also require work outside of regular office hours in order to meet with volunteers, movement partners or other stakeholders.
