About the role

A deep belief in the power of young people and community organising is at the heart of AYCC’s work. As Organising & Training Director, you’ll play a critical role in building, training and inspiring our national volunteer movement. In collaboration with your team, you’ll design strategies for growing the size, strength and skills of AYCC’s volunteer network, while ensuring our spaces are equitable and accessible for young people from all walks of life. You’ll work alongside our campaigners and volunteers to develop strategies to leave fossil fuels in the ground and build community support for climate action. There won’t be a dull moment in this role; you’ll be brainstorming ideas for our training programs, overseeing the logistics of inspirational volunteer summits, writing resources and guides, coaching and supporting your team, and so much more.

This role comes with a unique opportunity to implement AYCC’s next 3-year strategy, including building the youth climate justice movement through the once-in-a-generation potential held by Australia-Pacific hosting COP31 in 2026, and AYCC's national youth summit Power Shift.

ABout AYCC

The AYCC is a non-profit, non-partisan organisation building a movement of young people leading solutions to the climate crisis. We are Australia’s largest youth-led organisation and one of the most effective organisations dedicated to tackling climate change, with hundreds volunteers nationally and more than 200,000 supporters. Our major program areas are:

  • Campaigns to solve the climate crisis: We run bold campaigns to make sure Australia moves from fossil fuels to renewable energy as quickly as possible. We are currently focussed on holding back fossil fuel expansion through campaigns to stop the funding, social licence, and political support for climate-wrecking gas projects.

  • Training & movement building: AYCC’s power comes from community organising and a network of grassroots action groups across the continent. Our movement is radically inclusive, equitable and accessible, and prides itself on its diversity and scale. We empower volunteers to take on meaningful leadership and responsibility while supporting each other to learn and grow. Each year hundreds of young people participate in our online, in-school and in-person training programs to build their skills and confidence to take action on climate change.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Setting a strong vision and culture for AYCC’s organising team and volunteer network that reflects our values of justice, empowerment, accessibility, ambition and initiative.
  • Managing and motivating a team of staff organisers, who together hold responsibility for supporting our national network of grassroots groups, implementing campaign strategy, rolling out online and in-person training programs, and managing our schools program.
  • Coordinating our national training strategy and rolling out training programs that build the skills and confidence of young people in campaigning, organising, storytelling and understanding issues related to climate justice. This includes coordination of logistics and recruitment for training events, with support from the wider AYCC team.
  • Developing organising strategies to grow our movement, build volunteer leadership and have grassroots impact on our national campaigns to stop fossil fuel expansion. This includes overseeing process for new AYCC groups to form and new volunteer inductions.
  • Overseeing systems & processes for making our movement safe and effective - such as child safety processes, budget management, risk management, event accessibility and volunteer communications.
  • Directly mentoring volunteer leaders in 2-3 geographic areas, providing the coaching and support they require to roll out our campaigning and organising programs in their local contexts.
  • Designing and coordinating decentralised campaign actions and impact by AYCC local action groups, in collaboration with the campaigns team. This may include developing action resources, coordinating recruitment for rallies / mobilisations and conducting campaign planning with volunteer leaders.
  • Pitching our organising and training programs to potential funders - this may include drafting grant applications, attending meetings with funding partners and philanthropists, writing acquittals and other responsibilities, with instruction and support from the National Director.
  • Working as part of our leadership team on organisational strategy, annual planning, risk management and team culture. This includes assisting with whole-organisation priorities as needed, such as fundraising projects and campaign events.
