ABOUT US

Baluk Arts is a non-profit Victorian Aboriginal Arts Centre established in 2009 and based in the beautiful seaside town of Mount Eliza. Baluk is a local Bunurong and Boonwurrung word meaning many or group of people and this reflects the diversity of their artists and their work. Aboriginal owned and governed, the organisation represents Aboriginal artists from the Mornington Peninsula and beyond. Baluk Arts presents several exhibitions annually to local, national and international audiences as well as facilitating arts workshops to members, Aboriginal communities and the wider public.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Arts Program Coordinator is primarily responsible for programming and implementing workshops and exhibitions, liaising with artists and operating the gallery and retail space.

The role engages a wide range of stakeholders including the Art Centre community (staff, members, board), local Aboriginal communities and organisations, regional partners, state, national and international galleries and museums, business partners and buyers.

The position is based in Mount Eliza however requires some travel around the region and to events and exhibitions interstate.

The appointment is for an initial 2-year period with the option to extend.

ABOUT YOU

As the Program Coordinator, you will be committed to Aboriginal empowerment and the development of quality arts practice. You will build on the Art Centre’s past successes by ensuring the delivery of high quality artistic and cultural programs.

Desirable skills and experience

  • Community engagement skills
  • A passion for community development in an ATSI context
  • Knowledge and experience in community arts practices
  • Knowledge of community arts and current issues within the community
  • Ability to negotiate and motivate artists and arts and community groups
  • Customer Service
  • Well-developed computer skills, particularly with Microsoft Office
  • Well developed verbal and written communication skills
  • Possess sound organisational skills
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to take direction
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Current Victorian Drivers Licence
  • Experience in creating and running arts-based workshops
  • Knowledge of local community networks
  • Ability to write reports
