Job Description

Banyule Community Health is seeking to employ an enthusiastic and experienced Aboriginal Mental Health Liaison. This position works alongside and is guided by the Counsellor in our Aboriginal funded programs to provide culturally appropriate support and help to improve the wellbeing of clients accessing our programs.

The role also works closely with other internal Aboriginal-specific and community supports programs, as well as Aboriginal Controlled Organisations and other service providers to support clients in their mental health needs. This role is funded as part of a broader psychological supports strategy with the aim of making community based mental health care accessible and culturally relevant to Australian First Nations people. The role will provide both onsite and outreach services for clients of the program as well as supporting therapeutic and cultural support groups.

This role sits within the Aboriginal Health Team, but also within a broader Community Supports Team that has social workers, financial counsellors and community nurses. Aboriginal Health Workers strongly encouraged to apply.

The key responsibilities for this position include:

  • To support Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients overcome barriers to accessing mental health and wellbeing supports that support their independence, wellbeing and empowerment
  • To liaise with internal and external health services, Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations and other community services to support holistic supports for Australian First Nations clients who are seeking psychological support strategies
  • Organise and support therapeutic and cultural support groups that are part of the overall psychological strategies program
  • To work with staff from the Aboriginal Health funded programs, and other Banyule Community Health workers to deliver culturally safe and appropriate services
  • Maintain client records and report data in line with agency procedures and funding guidelines

The key skills required for this role include:

  • Demonstrated ability to liaise with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients and Banyule Community Health staff to ensure clients can access the health and wellbeing support services they require
  • Skills in delivering culturally safe, person centred care and a deep understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities experience of the health system
  • Understanding of mental health and wellbeing issues within Australian First Nations communities
  • Ability to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to encourage and support them to access services that support their health and wellbeing.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a range of health professionals, including specialists, GPS, nurses, counsellors and social workers
  • Understanding of the principles of client privacy and confidentiality
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people strongly encouraged to apply

Banyule Community Health has two main sites, one in the heart of West Heidelberg and the other near the train station of Greensborough.
