The Local Government Liaison Officer will assist BGLC to build and maintain key relationships with Local Government Authorities within the Grampians, Wimmera and Mallee Regions, and will assist Local Councils to work in partnership with BGLC to support the objectives in the Wotjobaluk, Jaadwa, Jadawadjali, Wergaia, and Jupagulk Recognition and Settlement Agreement (RSA).

The role will be a key support for Local Councils seeking to implement the actions in the Local Government Engagement Strategy (LGES), which is a key element of the RSA and a powerful driver of social, cultural, environmental, and economic empowerment for WJJWJ peoples. The successful candidate will also be responsible for supporting the coordination of information and training sessions to build local Councillors knowledge of the RSA and matters relevant to Traditional Owners in the region.

What we are looking for

The successful candidate will ideally possess the following:

Understanding of the opportunities, issues, and political, social, and economic context relating to First Peoples’ rights and interests in Victoria. Familiarity with the broader policy and legislative environment, and the ability to build others’ knowledge in this area.

  • Ability to work with Aboriginal people in ways that respect self-determination, cultural capability, empathy, and two-way learning.
  • Experience working with Local or State Government, and familiarity with stakeholder engagement, project management, and policy development.
  • Experience in Indigenous-led governance, and/or the management of partnerships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous organisations and stakeholders.
  • Experience working to coordinate engagement programs, professional development initiatives, and training sessions with partners and stakeholders.
  • Formal qualifications or demonstrated experience in project management, or community engagement and partnerships.

About us

Barengi Gadjin Land Council was established in 2005 following a Federal Court Native Title determination recognising the Wotjobaluk, Jaadwa, Jadawadjali, Wergaia and Jupagulk Peoples as the Traditional Owners of parts of the Wimmera and Southern Mallee. BGLC is also a Registered Aboriginal Party under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 (Vic) and works in partnership with government agencies and strategic partners to deliver outcomes for Traditional Owners.
