Barkly Regional Arts is a leading not-for-profit organisation delivering innovative art, music and event programs across the Barkly region of the Northern Territory for over 20 years. We collaborate with remote Indigenous communities to foster access, development and recognition of arts in the Barkly. Our art celebrates and preserves cultures and languages, bringing communities together while fostering social fulfilment and providing income and employment opportunities.
The Role
The Visual Arts Director leads our organisation's visual arts programming, developing and implementing public programs while working alongside the Operational Director to drive organisational leadership and strategic planning.

Key Responsibilities
1. Artistic Program Leadership
- Lead the Visual Arts team in delivering the annual artistic program
- Collaborate with the Operational Director and program teams to implement strategic initiatives
- Manage stakeholder relationships with artists, galleries, industry bodies, funders and community leaders
- Oversee artwork management, sales channels and studio gallery operations
- Support artists' creative development through workshops, exhibitions and industry events
- Coordinate the Barkly Artists Camp and artist development programs
2. Organisational Leadership
- Manage Visual Arts department HR in partnership with Operations Director
- Oversee daily operations and team priorities
- Collaborate on public communications and marketing
- Budget management and program delivery
- Program evaluation and reporting
- Stakeholder engagement and community representation
3. Outreach Program Management
- Develop sustainable systems for remote community art programs
- Travel to and engage with remote communities
- Mentor and empower local arts workers
- Build strong relationships with remote artists and community services
- Coordinate remote community events
4. Administrative Management
- Maintain accurate statistical records
- Prepare artistic and curatorial documentation
- Manage staff performance
- Financial reporting and compliance
- Grant writing and funding applications
Selection Criteria
Essential:
- University qualification in management, fine arts, art history or curatorship
- Demonstrated experience in the Indigenous arts sector
- Proven creative and commercial success in arts organisation management
- Strong track record working with Indigenous artists
- Experience in stakeholder collaboration and project delivery
- Successful grant writing history
- Demonstrated team leadership abilities
Desirable:
- Indigenous art centre management experience
- Remote community living/working experience
- Active arts sector network
- Public and commercial art sector experience
- Arts event management expertise
