BDAC is an ACCO (Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation) registered as a member under the umbrella of VACCHO (Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation) and represented nationally through NACCHO (National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation).

BDAC was founded to represent and provide services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living on Djaara Country.

Position Objective

The Director of Families, Healing and Response will lead and oversee the comprehensive suite of non-statutory family & community service programs including BDAC Intake and Assessment, Family Services, Family Safety (including the Orange Door), and Community Programs. This role is crucial in ensuring the delivery of high-quality, culturally sensitive support to families and individuals within the community, promoting healing and resilience.

Key Position Responsibilities

  • Provide operational leadership to the Families, Healing and Response team/s, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with community stakeholders, including government agencies, service providers, and community members. · Advocate for the needs of Aboriginal &/or Torres Strait families and individuals, ensuring their voices are heard and integrated into service planning and delivery.
  • Develop and Implement program evaluations to assess the effectiveness of program initiatives, ensuring alignment with community and organisational goals
  • Provide management support including performance management and supervision of employees to promote professional growth and improve service delivery capabilities.
  • Facilitate team meetings and workshops to encourage knowledge sharing and enhance team building and motivation.
  • Provide strategic and operational advice and support to the Families, Healing and Response management team and BDAC senior management to ensure the effective delivery of agreed programs.
  • As a member of the Executive Leadership team, assist with developing and delivering strategic and operational plans.
  • Identify any programs that may need additional support by providing recommendations to the CEO.
  • Prepare or contribute to funding submissions to deliver new initiatives focused on improving service delivery and outcomes for community.
  • Ensure data collection and funding reports are completed to a high standard and in a timely manner.
  • Promote BDAC programs and services to relevant external agencies and key stakeholders including participating in relevant committees and meetings.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Deep understanding of the cultural, social, and political issues facing Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander families, with experience in managing culturally appropriate programs and services.
  • Familiarity with relevant legislation, policies, and best practices in family support and community health, ensuring compliance and advocacy for systemic change.
  • Proven leadership and management experience in the Community Service sector including performance management and supervision of employees.
  • Experience in training, mentoring, and developing staff to enhance their skills and performance, fostering a positive and productive team culture.
  • Experience in the planning, development and evaluation of community services programs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly to a variety of audiences and effectively advocate for community needs.
  • Strong analytical, strategic and critical thinking skills, with the ability to identify challenges, develop solutions, and make informed decisions that benefit families and the community. 

Preferred / Desired / Mandatory Education, Training and/or Competencies

  • Qualification and/or experience in Business Management, Community Services or equivalent.
  • Experience working in an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (preferred) 
  • Leadership / Management experience (5+ years) (preferred)
