Located on Gadigal and Bidjigal land (Randwick NSW), Black Dog Institute is the only Medical Research Institute in Australia to investigate mental health across the full lifespan, our aim is to create a mentally healthier world for everyone. For over 20 years, we have been at the forefront of mental health research and have maintained a reputation as the face of mental health research and treatment in Australia.

The Role
The Director of Research Translation and Commercial Services (DRT&CS) is responsible for providing operational and strategic leadership across the Research Translation and Commercial Services Directorate of the Black Dog Institute.
Reporting into the Chief Operating Officer the DRT&CS will work closely with the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), to enable a high-performing team that is able to grow and achieve the strategic goals of ‘The Institute’.
The DRT&CS will be responsible for the translation and commercial operations of the Institute and will manage a diverse team of leaders that work across Translation & Implementation, Sales, Operations, Clinical Services and Commercialisation.
The DRT&CS will also work closely with other Black Dog Executives to drive improved governance and risk management and facilitate translations of research into implementation and action across multiple domains.
Duties & Responsibilities
Executive Leadership
- Collaborate with the Chief Operating Officer and the Executive Leadership Team to develop and implement the Black Dog Institute’s strategic objectives.
- Develop, execute and implement a revenue growth and diversification plan for the Directorate, whilst delivering short, medium and long term revenue growth targets.
- Develop an effective sales strategy, pipeline, sales targets and sales reporting.
- Foster a commercial and sales culture and focus across the Directorate.
- Empower the Translation & Commercial Services team by driving a high performing culture and promoting a collaborative environment.
- Contribute to the coordination of Operational, Resource and Budget (ORB) planning and to enable board reporting processes.
- Measure and report on operational performance and develop plans to improve relevant key performance indicators.
- Collaborate with other Executives and internal stakeholders to accomplish short and long- term operational goals.
- Navigate complex change initiatives.
Research Translation and Commercialisation
- Support of the Research Translation Framework operating system and the smooth transition of projects through this system.
- Support commercialisation of Black Dog intellectual property and establish effective processes across the Research Translation Framework to protect and manage Black Dog’s intellectual property.
- Establish and embed high quality systems and processes to support the planned growth of the organisation.
- Lead the establishment of high performance and efficient operations across all areas of ‘The Institute’.
- Drive income growth, lead improvement in business efficiencies and organisational processes, monitor business performance, ensure regulatory compliance and assist in building an organisational culture that drives the Institute in meeting its key objectives.
- Leverage market insights, business acumen, and innovative approaches to enhance revenue streams and ensure sustainable financial performance.
- Develop and implement process improvements that enhance operational efficiencies whilst ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and internal policies and procedures.
Skills & Experience Required
Essential Criteria
- Minimum ten (10) years’ experience in an executive management/director position in a commercial or finance related field.
- Demonstrated strong leadership skills in fostering a culture of collaboration, motivating and engaging a team of Senior Managers to meet strategic and organisational goals.
- Outcomes-driven professional with strong business and commercial acumen and a proven ability to foster a high-performing team culture.
- Demonstrated strong experience across financial, people management, business development, income generation and strategic leadership.
- Demonstrated background and experience in establishing a sales strategy and in managing teams to deliver against sales targets.
- Demonstrated experience in optimising business processes and identifying and implementing change in operational performance to drive efficiencies in operations.
- Understanding of risk management and governance for safety and wellbeing.
- Strategic organisation planning and implementation ability to inspire and communicate vision to all levels within the business.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence a diverse teams of senior leaders.
- Proven experience in driving significant change and experience successfully implementing business processes and systems.
- Experience managing and successfully executing large scale cross organisational projects.
Desirable Criteria
- Understanding of the healthcare, mental health and/or research sectors.
