Located on Gadigal and Bidjigal land (Randwick NSW), Black Dog Institute is the only Medical Research Institute in Australia to investigate mental health across the lifespan, our aim is to create a mentally healthier world for everyone. Emphasising a devoted focus to into suicide prevention, digital mental health, a workplace mental health, we undertake a unique ‘translational’ research approach that allows us to turn our world-class findings into new treatments, prevention strategies, clinical services, educational programs, and e-health products.

The Role

This position is part of an innovative project that aims to evaluate the effectiveness of safe spaces for people experiencing emotional distress or suicidal crisis. The Research Officer will work with a large team of researchers, collaborating organisations and people with lived experience to co-design and implement an evaluation of safe space models across multiple jurisdictions. You will be providing research and administrative support to the study and be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the study at specific study sites in Wollongong and Blacktown.

Duties & Responsibilties

  • Assist the team to co-design and conduct lived experience qualitative and quantitative studies
  • Conduct independent literature reviews and document analysis
  • Assist with data collection and analyses of qualitative and some qualitative results
  • Contribute to the preparation and publishing of results of the study in a range of academic and non-academic outputs
  • Recruit and interview research participants using various types of interview and survey methodologies
  • Maintain meticulous records whilst adhering to strict confidentiality

Skills & Experience Required

  • An honours degree in Psychology or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training
  • Demonstrated experience in undertaking research projects in the field of mental health, suicide prevention, or a related field
  • Demonstrated high level organisational, analytical and writing skills with experience in undertaking literature searches, and the capacity to prepare reports.
  • Strong skills in quantitative statistical analysis and in using statistical packages
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships and act with diplomacy and discretion when dealing with sensitive and confidential issues
