Foundation & Friends of the Botanic Gardens (Foundation & Friends) is a not-for-profit organisation that is devoted to supporting, protecting, and enhancing the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney, the Domain, the Australian Botanic Gardens Mount Annan, and the Blue Mountains Botanic Gardens Mount Tomah.

The recently renewed vision of Foundation & Friends is for ‘a thriving, connected community that leads fundraising and philanthropy to help the Gardens realise their vision.’ That is the people, communities, institutions and industries that are informed and inspired by our Botanic Gardens, public spaces and the Australian Institute of Botanical Science. We aim to motivate them to recognise the importance of plants in their lives and to support their conservation.

It is an exciting time to be joining the team at the Foundation & Friends as it is delivering its strategic springboard for future growth enhancing its support of one of Australia’s oldest cultural institutions.

ABOUT THE ROLE

This is a 3-day-a-week new position based in the stunning Botanic Gardens of Sydney with flexibility in working days and a balance of in office and work-from-home. It was created due to the growth of Foundation & Friends and is responsible for the operational financial management, reporting, compliance, and analysis of the organisation. Reporting to the Head of Business Operations, they also support the budgeting and audit processes and the Finance Audit and Risk Committee.

Main Responsibilities

A. Finance, Audit and Risk Management

  • With the support of the Finance Officer, prepare month and quarter-end reporting, including reconciliations, journals and analysis.
  • Assist the Head of Operations with budgeting, forecasting and preparation of the Financial Statements for the Trust and Charity.
  • Monitor and report quarterly on the funds available for charitable purpose, utilising knowledge in the Philanthropy team.
  • Support the Finance, Audit and Risk Committee (FAR) as needed.
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial and taxation (non-payroll) compliance reports.
  • Monitor cash flow and investment performance.
  • Manage the operations of the finance and payroll system (MYOB), banking and investment arrangements including merchant facilities.
  • Renew and update insurance policies annually including provision of information to the underwriters, utilising expertise from areas of the organisation.
  • Prepare schedules for the annual audit and liaise with the auditors on day-to-day issues, with input from the Finance Officer.
  • Working with the Office Coordinator, update and maintain the Fixed Asset register.
  • Update and ensure compliance with finance policies and procedures.
  • Support the Head of Business Operation in mitigating financial risk.

B. Other Duties

  • Support the Finance Officer and assist with day-to-day queries.
  • Provide other support to Head of Business Operations with facilities management, IT and other areas of the business as needed.

ABOUT YOU

Essential criteria:

  • Tertiary qualifications in accounting/finance or related studies or experience.
  • At least 3 years demonstrated experience working in a commercial, social enterprise, non-profit or similar environment.
  • Knowledge and experience with financial platforms and CRMs.
  • Demonstrated experience in management and financial reporting as well as the audit process.
  • Proved track record of managing financial compliance including BAS and FBT.
  • A working knowledge of risk management and compliance.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good attention to detail and excellent communication skills.
  • Demonstrate a passion/commitment for the protection of environment and cultural institutions.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Have had experience in paid or voluntary work for a not-for-profit organisation.
  • Experience working with MYOB, CRMs, payroll and online retail and payment platforms

The Financial Accountant reports directly to the Head of Business Operations of the Foundation and Friends of the Botanic Gardens.
