Research Position

Bugmy Bar Book
  • Casual Research Position
  • For the Bugmy Bar Book

The Bugmy Bar Book Project aims to promote a greater understanding of the impacts of adverse life experiences of people engaged in criminal sentencing proceedings, and other proceedings including bail, mental health diversionary applications, civil practice areas, coronial inquests and other inquisitorial jurisdictions.

The Project Committee is currently seeking researchers to assist with updating existing chapters of the Bugmy Bar Book. You can see the existing chapters on the Bugmy Bar Book website: here.

Updating a chapter involves:

  • Conducting a high-level literature review to ascertain whether there are any recently published reports or peer-reviewed published studies which should be incorporated into the chapter, and incorporating suggested updates via tracked changes;
  • Researching whether there is more recent data available to replace any existing data cited;
  • Incorporating feedback from an expert review; and
  • Completing a provided table to identify which sources have been updated, replaced or added to assist with tracking chapter updates over time.

Researchers will be supervised by the Bugmy Bar Book Legal and Program manager and may have additional supervision by Committee members who will offer guidance and feedback on your work. Committee members include judicial officers, barristers, senior lawyers and senior academics.

You will be provided with further documentation explaining the Project’s research requirements, editorial style and other practical matters prior to commencing.

There is no set amount of time required to complete a Chapter update, however more thorough research will necessarily require more time.

The Committee is hoping to have all chapters on the website updated by the end of September. We estimate that the work will be on average 10 to 20 hours per week over two months.
