About the Service

Strong Steps is a CAAPS Aboriginal Corporation satellite service, funded by the Northern Territory primary health network, to provide AOD counselling and support for people in Darwin’s rural areas.

About the position

As the Alcohol and Other Drugs Counsellor, you will provide clients with comprehensive assessment and screening, counselling, brief intervention, advocacy, information and education. The program is aimed at the empowerment of participants to cope with drug and alcohol problems through screening, assessment, counselling information and education, brief intervention and referrals to other services.

Essential skills and experience

  • Tertiary qualification (minimum of Diploma in Counselling) or higher qualifications in a related field such as Social Work or Psychology.
  • Demonstrated experience working within a specific therapeutic framework.
  • Ability to remain up to date with current drug and alcohol best practice and to provide information and support to clients.
  • Demonstrated ability to modify communication styles and techniques to meet client’s needs (Multilingual ability an advantage).
  • Demonstrated ability to work positively both as part of a multidisciplinary team and on an independent basis.
  • Understand and adhere to legislative requirements of the role and conscious of and respectful of the exposure to personal and confidential information.
  • Good written communication, administrative and documentation skills.
  • Demonstrated computer skills including MS Suite, email, data collection/input.
  • Dedicated and careful; high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage own workload and work independently.
