Cancer Support Coordinator - Prevention

Cancer Council ACT

Who we are

Cancer Council is the only charity that works across every area of cancer, from research to prevention and support. Every day, we support people affected by cancer when they need it most, speak out on behalf of the community on cancer issues, empower people to reduce their cancer risk, and find new ways to better detect and treat cancer. Learn more about what we do here.

Cancer Council ACT has been advocating for Canberrans living with cancer for almost 50 years. We are a group of passionate healthcare professionals and operational staff who are dedicated to a cancer-free future for the nation’s capital.

Together, it’s all of us against cancer.

Who we’re looking for

We are looking for a collaborative new team member with passion and experience in educating the community, as we support Canberrans to quit smoking and vaping and teach them how to support their peers.

Cancer Council ACT has recently received landmark funding from the ACT Government to take on the challenge of informing and protecting the next generation when it comes to tobacco and e-cigarettes. We are excited to move forward with providing education and advice on support pathways to ACT secondary schools, sporting clubs and community organisations.

In this role, you will engage with key sectors of the ACT community and provide ongoing training and support to ensure they achieve the program’s objectives. As part of the team, you will:

  • Present education sessions and courses to ACT secondary schools, sporting clubs and community organisations on smoking and e-cigarettes
  • Ensure grant funding targets and deliverables are met or exceeded through each reporting period and contribute to the report preparation at the end of each cycle.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of smoking and e-cigarette cessation and support pathways.
  • Liaise and maintain relationships with relevant stakeholders including ACT Health, ACT Education Directorate, sporting clubs and local community organisations.
  • Maintain relationships within the Cancer Council Federation and work with committees and stakeholders where appropriate.
  • Work with the CCACT Marketing Team to support the promotion and growth of the prevention programs in the ACT.

About you

We are looking for someone who shares our values, with an interest in the work that we do. As this is a cancer prevention education role, we will also highly value applicants who have:

  • An understanding of tobacco and e-cigarette usage and control issues and experience in delivery of health projects.
  • Tertiary qualifications in public health
  • Experience in working in the community / charity sector, health promotion or education.
  • Experience with presenting health information in public forums, both online and in person
  • Highly developed community/stakeholder engagement and communication skills that promote effective partnerships.
  • The ability to work with a small cohesive team, willingness to multi-skill and support the overall objectives of the organisation.
  • A current valid drivers licence (not a Learner’s Permit).
  • A current Working with Vulnerable People check or be willing to obtain one.

Desirable

  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
  • Practical knowledge and experience in addiction theory, behavioural change models, brief interventions and motivational interviewing.
  • Experience using a CRM system such as Salesforce
