Background​

The Carbon Market Institute (CMI) is an independent business member-based institute with a 2050 vision of a prosperous, negative emissions, nature positive world.  Our focus is to: 

  • Build capacity and opportunities through inclusive engagement and education. 
  • Facilitate best practice and integrity in decarbonisation strategies, investments, carbon projects and market participants. 
  • Develop and support policy and regulatory frameworks aligned with UNFCCC Paris Agreement climate goals. 

Working across a large range of climate policy and carbon market programs and projects, CMI contributes to market development, market integrity and research and analysis. Around 150 corporate members span the carbon market supply chain including emissions intensive industry, service and technology providers, financiers, carbon developers, transport and primary producers.

CMI is governed by a Board elected by its members, has a three-year transition to zero strategy and annually updates its Advocacy Positions: Public Policy and Voluntary Carbon Markets.

CMI requires a Head of Finance and Organisational Services to join a passionate and dedicated team. The successful candidate will have a minimum of five years’ experience in accounting and be responsible for CMI’s financial management requirements.

This role is three days per week with flexible working arrangements and ideally some capacity for extra time at mutually agreed peak times. The role is part of CMI Executive team and reports to the CEO. CMI’s office is based in Melbourne but candidates based elsewhere will be considered.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Manage the day-to-day function of CMI’s financial operations and business processes ensuring operational integrity, payroll, cash management (accounts receivables/payables) and controls over transactions.
  2. Work with the CEO to develop comprehensive budgets and forecasts in accordance with internal procedures.
  3. Drive the delivery of CMI’s annual financial statutory accounts and legislated ACNC reporting requirements for NFPs, including management of annual audit.
  4. Ensure the delivery of high-quality monthly management reports, clearly interpreting the Organisations financial position and key issues that create risk are reported.
  5. Provide advice to the CEO, Executive and board on current and future business performance issues to support decision making and budget formulation.
  6. Work closely with CMI Executive members to formulate strategies and recommendations to optimise financial performance and improve the financial position of CMI.
  7. Oversee financial management and service contracts (including outsourced IT functions).
  8. Support effective governance and risk management activities with CEO and Audit and Risk Committee
  9. Successfully deliver outcomes, reporting requirements, projects and any other deliverables within approved budgets and within legislative or internal deadlines and timeframes.
  10. Participate in and promote a learning, team-based culture.
  11. Other duties as required.

Skills & Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in accounting.
  • Tertiary-level degree in finance and accounting, with CPA or CA qualification, or equivalent.
  • Demonstrable experience in financial reporting, management reporting, analysis, budgeting, forecasting, general accounts management (previous audit management experience desirable).
  • Ability to drive continuous improvement of finance systems, policies and procedures.
  • Experience in risk management desirable.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written – across a variety of collateral, including report writing) and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (excel proficiency), XERO and Salesforce desirable.
  • Self-motivated, ability to work well remotely, under pressure and with competing tasks.
  • Results driven with demonstrated ability to meet and/or exceed set targets/KPIs
  • Exceptional teamwork and collaboration.
