An OPPORTUNITY to Make a difference

Caxton Legal Centre represents the interests of people who are disadvantaged or low-income earners when they come into contact with the Law. Caxton is seeking a part-time lawyer to work in our Human Rights and Civil Law Practice. The successful applicant will be responsible for providing legal advice and casework to clients in the areas of employment, sexual harassment, human rights and anti-discrimination across State and Federal jurisdictions. Other duties may include supervising volunteers including at night sessions and providing follow-up advice, providing advice to daytime clients, supervising student legal clinics, and supervising PLT students and secondees.

Key accountabilities

  • Work with minimal supervision and apply in-depth existing knowledge of relevant areas of law to deliver legal advice and conduct both simple and complex casework
  • Apply and strengthen existing knowledge of relevant areas of law to deliver legal advice and casework directed by the Practice Director and Managing Senior Lawyer, Employment Law
  • Work collaboratively with social workers to provide a holistic, client-centered service to diverse clients within a human rights framework
  • Deliver community education, engage in sector development and networking, contribute to law and policy reform

Essential requirements

  • Demonstrated experience across relevant areas of law particularly in the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission, Fair Work Commission, Queensland Human Rights Commission and Australian Human Rights Commission
  • Bachelor of Laws
  • Admitted in an appropriate Australian state jurisdiction, and in the High Court of Australia
  • Current or eligible for a Queensland Practising Certificate

Our full-time staff enjoy a 35-hour working week paid at the full-time Award rate, with time off in lieu if additional approved hours are worked. Paid Christmas leave is provided during the office shut-down period in addition to four weeks paid annual leave.

The successful applicant will have the ability to work with clients with complex legal and social issues and provide advice to clients who may have an impairment or be culturally or linguistically diverse.
