Lawyer - Evening Advice Sessions

  • Classification Level 5 to 6 SCHADS Awards (will be assessed based on experience)
  • Part-Time 3 days/week (Working hours from 2 pm to 10 pm, Monday to Wednesday)
  • Fixed Term Contract until 30 June 2025 and available for an immediate start.

Remuneration and Benefits

  • $97,388 - $111,092 per annum excluding super and attractive salary packaging options ($68.171 - $77,761 per annum at 0.7 FTE)
  • Four weeks of annual leave per annum plus leave loading as well as additional paid leave during the Christmas closure;
  • Full time staff work a 35-hour week and we offer flexible working arrangements;
  • Staff are eligible to salary sacrifice a portion of their base salary (up to $18,000);

Key accountabilities

  • Under the direction of the Senior Managing Lawyer, Evening Advice and Clinics:

    • Work with minimal supervision and apply in-depth existing knowledge of relevant areas of law to deliver legal advice
    • Supervise the legal advice provided by volunteer lawyers at the Evening Advice Sessions
    • Work collaboratively with the volunteer coordinator to develop and maintain relationships with volunteer lawyers and students to ensure high quality legal advice is provided at the Evening Advice Sessions
    • Ensure appropriate referrals of clients from the Evening Advice Sessions to daytime staff for further legal assistance including advice, task and casework
    • Troubleshoot Evening Advice Session issues, escalate more serious matters to the line manager and provide feedback for continual improvement of the program
    • Work collaboratively with social workers to provide a holistic, client-centered service to diverse clients within a human rights framework

Essential requirements

  • Demonstrated experience across civil law areas such as contract, consumer credit and debt, anti-discrimination, employment law, and administrative law.
  • A high level of written and oral communication skills
  • Bachelor of Laws
  • Admitted in an appropriate Australian state jurisdiction, and in the High Court of Australia
  • Current or eligible for a Queensland Unrestricted Practising Certificate

Our full-time staff enjoy a 35 hour working week paid at the full-time Award rate, with time off in lieu if additional approved hours are worked.

Paid Christmas leave is provided during the office shut-down period to New Years in addition to four weeks paid annual leave.
