Caxton Legal Centre is a community legal centre whose purpose is to promote and protect human rights in Queensland through access to justice. Caxton provides accessible legal information so people know their rights and can prevent or respond to legal problems. Prioritising those who experience disadvantage, trauma and marginalisation, Caxton provides free, high-quality legal assistance and social supports. Caxton advocates for reform to unfair laws, policies and systems. Working collaboratively with volunteers and community partners, Caxton reaches underserved populations. We do all of this to create a more just and inclusive Queensland.

This social worker role is embedded in our Human Rights and Civil Law Practice with a focus on supporting people being assisted by the state-wide Queensland Retirement Village and Parks Advisory Service (QRVPAS). The social worker – QRVPAS also contributes to Caxton’s strategic outcomes and the seamless integration of social work within Caxton’s multi-disciplinary model. From time to time this role may also be called on to assist clients in other program areas and for urgent responses to people in distress who call or visit the centre.

Key accountabilities

• Scope and deliver trauma-informed, short-term support and ongoing casework for clients of the QRVPAS as they receive legal advice, assistance and information about legal matters in relation to their retirement village or manufactured home park. 
• Work collaboratively to offer integrated services with Caxton’s lawyers and social workers.
• Work collaboratively with government and non-government agencies to support the provision of holistic, client-centered and culturally appropriate services and referrals to diverse clients within a human rights framework.
• Provide information sessions across Queensland to residents and other groups of interested individuals and service providers.

Essential requirements

• Bachelor of Social Work or equivalent relevant qualification
• Eligible for AASW membership
• Minimum three years’ experience in the provision of social work services
• Training in trauma-informed practice

The successful applicant will have the ability to work with clients with complex legal and social issues and assist clients who may have an impairment or be culturally or linguistically diverse.

These positions are designed to be based in South Brisbane alongside our other staff, however consideration can be made across the greater Brisbane area depending on need.
