About the team

The Policy & Advocacy Unit brings together cancer control evidence, government relations and community to advocate for changes to public policy, programs and funding to reduce the impact of cancer.

About the role

The Advocacy Specialist will play a key role in achieving CCNSW vision of a cancer free future by developing and delivering impactful advocacy activities and campaigns that leverage digital and community-based strategies. The successful candidate will work with policy, communications and community staff, as well as engaging volunteers and the wider community to deliver meaningful advocacy that is effective, evidence-based and informed by lived experience.

Key responsibilities of the role

  • Work with the Lead, Government Relations and Advocacy to plan and execute advocacy activities and campaigns
  • Leverage digital and other strategies to engage stakeholders and community to help achieve CCNSW’s advocacy goals.
  • Work with internal teams, including policy and research colleagues, to create compelling campaign messaging, content and materials that align with CCNSW’s advocacy priorities.
  • Maintain and grow the community advocacy base for CCNSW.
  • Ensure CCNSW’s policy positions and advocacy strategy are informed by lived experience.
  • Design and provide training, resources and toolkits for staff and volunteers undertaking advocacy
  • Build and nurture relationships with community advocacy ambassadors to amplify the voice of our supporters and people affected by cancer.
  • Work closely with internal teams to manage and grow the organisation’s digital advocacy presence.
  • Utilise social media platforms, website and email newsletters to engage supporters and drive advocacy efforts.
  • Use data and insights to monitor reach and engagement with advocacy activities and assess effectiveness
  • Maintain and coordinate key administrative processes, including database administration and project coordination.
  • Adhere to all CCNSW internal policies and external legislations i.e Privacy Act, PCI Compliance, Charitable Fundraising Act requirements, financial controls etc.
  • Contribute to the documentation of internal policies and processes.

About you

Essential

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in public health, public policy, communications, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in advocacy, campaigning, or a related role, preferably in the health or social sector.
  • Experience developing and delivering advocacy strategies, particularly community-based and/or digital advocacy
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to write and speak in a manner designed to persuade and inspire others
  • Excellent relationship building and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external collaborators.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Understanding of digital channels and social media platforms to engage and communicate with advocates and the public

Desirable

  • Experience tailoring campaign information to a variety of audiences
  • Ability to manage change and demonstrate flexibility in approach to stakeholder management.
  • Experience evaluating the impact of campaigns using data and social media engagement activities.
  • Experience managing volunteers
