About the team

The Finance, Strategy & Operations (FSO) Division supports CCNSW’s strategic ambition by enabling and facilitating the building of a future ready and sustainable organisation. FSO’s key objective is to remove any bottlenecks that may impede CCNSW’s growth and strategic outcomes, without exposing CCNSW to compliance, governance, cyber, security, or safety risks outside of CCNSW’s risk appetite.

About the role

Reporting to the General Counsel, the Legal Counsel provides support and advice in relation to legal matters to the business. This team is responsible for establishing and maintaining policies and processes to identify, assess, monitor and manage organisation-wide legal compliance. It also exists to provide sound advice and support to the CEO, the Board, the Executive, managers and staff on all matters that have legal implications or present a legal risk.

Key responsibilities of the role

• Assisting in the drafting, review and approval of all contractual agreements, and assisting business owners in negotiating with customers, suppliers, service providers, retailers, partners, collaborators and other stakeholders, in respect of a wide range of commercial, IT, IP, research, events and fundraising agreements.
• Providing advice (and managing advice provided by external lawyers) on legal and regulatory issues of importance to the organisation, including the Charitable Fundraising Legislation and Privacy Law.
• Assisting in the development of policies, procedures and training programs for staff on relevant legal issues.
• Assisting in the protection of organisation’s intellectual property, including trade marks.
• Assisting in the regular monitoring and reporting of changes to relevant legislation and regulations, taking or advising on appropriate action to respond to such changes.
• Liaising on matters that have been briefed to external lawyers.
• Regularly reviewing all internal policies and procedures to make recommendations that ensure compliance with legal requirements.
• Adhering to all CCNSW internal policies and external legislations i.e. Privacy Act, ACNC Compliance, Charitable Fundraising Act requirements, financial controls etc.

About you

Essential:

• Tertiary qualification in law and current practicing certificate.
• 3-5 years Post Qualification Experience
• Sound negotiating and drafting skills.
• Emerging track record in managing legal activities gained either in a law firm or in-house.
• Experience interpreting and negotiating contracts with suppliers.
• Strong verbal, presentation and written communication skills.
• Strong service orientation and interpersonal capability.
• Sound commercial judgement and experience.
• Confident, reliable and mature in attitude, who can work autonomously where appropriate.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a range of stakeholders

Desirable:

• Knowledge of Privacy Law and Charitable Fundraising Legislation.
• Previous knowledge of Wills and Succession Law.
• Evolving knowledge of ESG requirements; Cybersecurity risks; Modern Slavery; AI regulation.
• Some basic knowledge of or interest in oncology, cancer services and the needs of persons affected by cancer.
