About the team
The Nutrition and Alcohol Unit focuses on changing health behaviour through building knowledge, changing attitudes, developing skills and advocating for change in policies and regulation that creates a less obesogenic environment, reduces alcohol harms and encourages healthy lifestyles to reduce cancer risk.
About the role:
This role will provide evidence-based information and assist with developing and implementing research strategies, policy positions, advocacy campaigns and cancer prevention activities related to nutrition, obesity prevention, alcohol and physical activity to support people to lead healthy lifestyles and to influence supportive environments.
This role will be a 24-month contract.
Key responsibilities of the role:
- Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of nutrition, healthy weight, alcohol and/or physical activity and associated issues related to cancer control.
- Assist in the development of policy positions, advocacy campaigns and prevention strategies related to healthy eating, obesity prevention, food marketing, food labelling, alcohol and other nutrition and physical activity issues.
- Co-ordinate and/or assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of social marketing campaigns and health promotion strategies related to healthy eating, obesity prevention, reducing alcohol use and physical activity.
- Identify gaps in research, advocacy and/or program delivery related to healthy eating, obesity prevention, alcohol, food marketing, food labelling, and other nutrition and physical activity issues and contribute to research/project proposals to address identified gaps and opportunities.
- Draft reports and publishable journal articles related to food and nutrition policy, healthy eating, obesity prevention, alcohol and physical activity research.
- Contribute to persuasive submissions for key decision makers (e.g. government bodies) about a range of food and nutrition policy, healthy eating, obesity prevention, alcohol and physical activity policy.
- Develop and review resources and digital information to communicate the latest evidence regarding nutrition, body weight, physical activity, alcohol use and cancer risk; and effectively communicate CCNSW work on food and nutrition policy, healthy eating, obesity prevention, alcohol and physical activity policy issues.
- Assist in developing and disseminating content for websites and digital communications related to food and nutrition policy issues, healthy eating, obesity prevention, alcohol and physical activity.
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to understand and communicate initiatives in the areas of food and nutrition policy, healthy eating, obesity prevention, alcohol and physical activity, including providing timely and relevant support and input for media, and advocacy and lobbying activities of CCNSW.
- Support other NAU staff as required, including co-supervising students and volunteers.
About you
Essential:
- Tertiary qualifications in dietetics, nutrition and/or public health.
- Demonstrated understanding of population health.
- Understanding of nutrition and food policy issues as they relate to obesity and cancer control.
- Effective project management skills.
- Excellent research and critical appraisal skills, including the ability to develop and implement research protocol, undertake statistical analysis and assess scientific evidence.
- High level written and oral communication skills, including presentations, report writing and drafting academic publications.
- Ability to communicate and translate scientific evidence and information for a variety of audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to build work as part of a team and manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- A self-starter with demonstrated initiative, ability to meet tight deadlines, work autonomously, identify and resolve problems and handle competing demands
- High level computer literacy in Microsoft office.
Desirable:
- Understanding of the NSW Health system, including policies, strategies and processes related to food, nutrition, obesity, alcohol and physical activity.
- Experience in managing websites and digital communications.
- Experience or understanding of public health advocacy as it relates to nutrition and alcohol issues.
- Understanding of cancer epidemiology.
- Previous experience working in a health-related or non-government organisation.
- Previous experience in writing policy submissions, policy positions, professional reports and/or journal publications.
