Clean Up Australia inspires and mobilises communities to improve and conserve our environment, eliminate litter, and end waste.

This mission is the backbone to the work we do at Clean Up Australia – encouraging volunteers to take practical action and remove accumulated litter from the environment, both on Clean Up Australia Day and all year round.

Primary Purpose

To encourage, manage and grow the Clean Up Australia (CUA) program within schools across Australia.

Reporting Relationship

This position reports to the CUA Community Manager.

Key Challenges for the Position

  • Grow participation of schools (including pre-schools) in Clean Up Australia events and activities. In FY23, 4,776 schools participated in Clean Up campaigns.
  • Grow awareness of CUA’s national Schools Clean Up Day.
  • Build a compelling CUA schools offering that is embraced by schools and welcomed as part of the curriculum.
  • Manage school activity delivery, managing multiple tasks on limited resources, within budget and to deadline, while contributing to a positive team environment.

Scope of Activities

  • Schools Clean Up Day – which is held on the Friday prior to Clean Up Australia Day (held on the first Sunday in March). In 2024, Schools Clean Up Day will be held on Friday 1 March.
  • Geographically based events such as the Great Spring Clean.
  • Everyday Clean Up (EDCU) action.
  • Education and associated network/agencies – e.g. Cool.org (the organisation that develops the lesson plans for CUA), schools associations, P&F/P&C network.

Key Accountabilities

  • Identify and recruit the support of national, state, regional and local groups, agencies and authorities [Allies] in the schools’ sector/network.
  • Innovate and maintain systems to continually add value to education-based alliances including developing and maintaining benefits offered.
  • Manage an annual calendar of school-based outreach and incentive-based activities that delivers measurable outputs and outcomes.
  • Work alongside team members also supporting campaigns in the education sector e.g. CUA’s Corporate Partnerships and Marketing Managers.
  • Manage and provide support and advice for schools’ engagement and participation in Clean Up event-based action, reporting outputs and outcomes against agreed targets including:
    • Increased site and volunteer registrations
    • Geographic events
    • Organisation-branded events or hubs
  • Be the first point of contact for teachers and student event-based site supervisors and volunteers – assisting them with their registrations; answering queries and providing solutions to issues they raise.
  • Identify potential projects which address environmental issues which align with CUA’s mission and vision and can be delivered in partnership with Ally organisations.
