Coast Shelter is a leading Central Coast not for profit charity assisting families, adults and young people with complex issues arising from their experience of homelessness, abuse and neglect. Our organisation is driven by our mission to deliver innovative solutions to address homelessness, violence and poverty to achieve immediate and lasting changes.

We are a Tier 3 community housing body and the largest Specialist Homelessness Service in Regional NSW. We operate 9 crisis shelters, a Community Centre and more than 50 outreach properties, housing over 150 people across the Central Coast every night.

The Role

For close to 25 years, Coast Shelter’s Community Centre has provided a service that is inclusive and a safe meeting place for all people when they need help the most. Over our history we have continued to look for innovative ways to change the lives of those we support and are seeking a passionate, highly motivated Social Worker to join our Community Centre in this newly created role.

This position will join our growing multidisciplinary direct service team.

The position will grow the Community Centre’s support model ensuring clients have access to a suite of primary and allied health services, specialist housing options, assertive outreach, therapeutic supports, early intervention & prevention services, legal, education and employment support.

Many of those accessing the Community Centre are homeless and/or not currently safe and this new position will play a pivotal role in providing interim and short-term case management to get clients prompt access to appropriate housing and support.

This role will hold both a casework and community development function, integrating with the broad range of service offering present within Coast shelter.

All about You

We are looking for an innovative Social Worker who can respond and creatively engage those people with the most complex barriers within our community.

To be considered for the position you must be able to address the essential criteria below:

  • Tertiary qualification in Social Work or a related discipline
  • Demonstrated experience working within a case management framework
  • An highly developed understanding of the homelessness service system, with knowledge of patterns, trends, systemic issues, and principles in working with people
  • Experience of working in accordance with person centred practice and trauma responsive care principles
  • Advanced understanding of child protection issues and client vulnerabilities such as drug and alcohol use, domestic violence, mental health issues, and the impact of trauma and the effect on child behaviour and development
  • Ability to coach, mentor, and collaborate with a range of colleagues to build understanding and knowledge and improve outcomes for clients, with the ability to adapt approach for the audience and encourage reflective practice
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
