Concern Australia works in partnership with young people and their families to create positive opportunities and hopeful futures. Our programs provide education, employment, housing, youth justice and homelessness services. We focus on innovative and empowering pathways which build on young people’s talents and resilience and support them to reach their goals.

fiXit Social Enterprise is an automotive workshop specialising in affordable car renovations and servicing. The workshop provides employment and skill development for young people who have completed Concern Australia’s 5-week Hand Brake Turn automotive training course. Working alongside the Workshop Coordinator, young people gain practical workplace experience servicing cars for the public, community partners and staff, as well as the repair and refurbishment of cars donated to the program.

fiXit isn’t just about fixing vehicles; it’s about mending lives and constructing a community where everyone accesses reliable, affordable, and socially responsible automotive solutions. All profits are reinvested back into the program in the form of wages for traineeships offered to the young people.

About the role

Reporting to the General Manager – Business Operations, the fiXit Mechanic supports our social enterprise, assisting the team to build a sustainable business with a reputation as a safe and trustworthy workshop for our community. The Mechanic will work alongside Youth Engagement Workers and junior employees to provide opportunities for young people to gain automotive experience and life skills through short term employment. The Mechanic collaborates with administration staff and is supported by relevant IT systems, which will enable them to develop and maintain sustainable processes and practices. The successful applicant will preferably have a Heavy Vehicle Driver’s Licence, as we offer a tow truck pick-up service for customers. However, the organisation is willing to support the successful applicant to obtain one if required. The Mechanic will partner with the Hand Brake Turn program from time to time, offering training support for mobile Hand Brake Turn courses around Melbourne or within the Dandenong workshop and classroom.

This position is classified in accordance with the Manufacturing and Associated Industries and Occupations Award 2020, Modern award MA00010, Supervisor/Trainer/Coordinator – Level 1.

What you will need to succeed

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Qualifications in an automotive-related certificate or higher and/or,
  • Extensive experience in an automotive workshop.
  • Experience in working with young people.
  • Experience in volunteering or working in the not-for-profit sector.
  • Heavy Vehicle Driver’s Licence, or the willingness to obtain one.
