Connecting Home works using different programs to support survivors on their journey of healing through walking with individuals and families on this journey and using goal setting principles. At Connecting Home we believe that everyone is unique and will require tailored supports and programs to assist with an individual’s journey of healing.

About the National Redress Support Services offered by Connecting Home

Following a key recommendation of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse as of July 1, 2018 survivors of institutional child sexual abuse can apply for redress through the National Redress Scheme. Connecting Home’s National Redress Support Service provides advocacy and support services to Aboriginal people who are interested in seeking redress through the National Redress Scheme.

We work with individuals across Victoria, including those in Victorian prisons. We provide individual support and assistance to our clients, including making referrals for counselling and case management services where required. Whilst acknowledging the person’s Aboriginal Identity is critical, it is also essential that all aspects of a clients heritage and identity needs are acknowledged and supported respectfully.

Support Worker - NRS (Part time / Full Time)

The primary responsibility of this role is to provide person centred and culturally appropriate support to our clients. This will be achieved by using the Connecting Our Holistic Outcomes (CoHo’s) Framework as a structure and utilising open questioning and appreciative enquiry techniques to assisting people to explore and direct their own individual goals.

Position Specific Responsibilities

  • community education about the National Redress Scheme
  • supporting people to apply for Redress through the National Redress Scheme and assisting them throughout the process
  • accessing relevant support for Aboriginal people who are going through the journey of accessing redress
  • providing information and support to family members of those applying for redress
  • assistance with accessing records including DHHS files, HREOC testimonies and records of private sessions to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.
  • Ensure that client’s records are maintained
  • Assess the needs of the clients and assist the clients using the CoHo’s case management framework
  • Provide a support service including: referral, support and information for clients, their families and service providers
  • Provide guidance and support to clients and their families
  • Identify suitable support options available for clients
  • Create and maintain an environment that empowers people from the Stolen Generations
  • Assist in the development of programs appropriate to Stolen Generations clients
  • Advocate for the Stolen Generations
  • Identify new and emerging issues as they arise
  • Maintain the highest levels of confidentiality
  • Adopt and apply OH&S policies and procedures to ensure a safe work environment.

Professional experience, and key knowledge areas

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Indigenous societies, cultures and issues affecting the Stolen Generations
  • Demonstrated experience in communicating effectively with Indigenous peoples and communities
  • Have a good understanding of the needs and issues of people from the Stolen Generations and knowledge of the range specialist service options available from both Aboriginal and Mainstream agencies
  • Experience in and the ability to competently assess client needs and develop and implement appropriate action plans to meet individual needs
  • An understanding of case management practices and techniques
  • Continue relationships with service providers to facilitate referrals and establish clear pathways for people from the Stolen Generations in accessing a range of generic and specialist services
  • Well developed communication (both oral and written) skills with the capacity to prepare reports and correspondence in clear and concise language
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills with the capacity to liaise effectively with a wide range of clients and service providers, including the ability to work cooperatively as a member of a team
  • Passionate about the healing journey for Stolen Generations
