The Central Queensland Community Legal Centre seeks an experienced Solicitor who is enthusiastic and committed. The role is full time contract to 30 June 2025. As a community legal centre, we work with the vulnerable and disadvantaged in regional, rural and remote Central and Western Queensland. The centre’s focus is the provision of a generalist legal service and offers a wide range of services including the provision of legal advice, legal task support, casework and information/referral services.

Key Accountabilities

  • Providing legal advice and referrals to clients in a range of legal areas during face to face, video conference and telephone appointments and at outreach locations as required.
  • Ability to attend Duty Lawyer services for domestic violence matters at designated Magistrates Courts.
  • Working collaboratively with social workers and other staff to provide legal information and guidance and consult with other staff to provide appropriate non-legal referrals as required.
  • Ensuring safety considerations are routinely and comprehensively addressed when undertaking legal work providing support, information, and advice to clients.
  • Liaise with external agencies and make client referrals where services are more appropriately provided or should be supplemented through accessing another service.
  • Responsible for the CQCLC Mount Isa branch office.
  • Develop and deliver Community Legal Education initiatives within the CQCLC’s geographic area. 

Skills and Experience

  • Admitted to practice as a solicitor in the state of Queensland with a minimum 2 years PAE.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and legal experience in generalist legal advice including drafting relevant court documents and management of files.
  • Demonstrated experience in decision making and problem solving including in crisis situations and where risk to client safety is involved.
  • Experience in DV, child protection and family law advantageous
  • Proven ability to work effectively independently, and within a team environment.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and communication skills including the ability to work with clients from diverse backgrounds including vulnerable clients.
  • Willingness to participate and deliver community legal education activities.

Other Essential Requirements

  • Bachelor of Laws 
  • Admitted as a legal practitioner in the Supreme court of Queensland
  • Blue Card (working with Children check)
  • Current open Queensland driver’s license.
